I always carry a sharpie and it makes for great conversation with the cast. Like wickedqrent said "gets confusing sometimes remembering that I'm the one to give it back to."
I carry a Sharpie too, usually either silver or some other funky color. It always makes a conversation starter, if nothing else.
I totally agree to bringing your own Sharpies. I always have a black and a silver one with me, usually a few of each. It's hard to share with people and it does get confusing. Once Rosie O'Donnell had my Sharpie and started to work down the line with it. I asked if I could have it back and she asked if she could steal it. I agreed. =P So yes, the actors do have a tendency to walk away with things...
Hehe appropriate you wrote that Gypsy, as we both experienced that on different sides of the Sweeney door. And yes, it definitely makes for amusing conversation with the actors.

ooooh, I'm so glad for this thread now because I'm going to see Sweeney Todd and Spelling Bee in 3 weeks and was wondering how they were!
I'm so glad to read that both those shows were on the "gracious cast" list.
YAY!
-Feste from "Twelfth Night"
Hairspray cast!
And they bring their own sharpies!
Diana DeGarmo just joined the cast and she's a sweetheart!
Stole the show AND my heart!
but NOT my sharpie.
This Sharpie thing brings up another great thing about the ASU stage door: one of the Palace stage door people, Pecas, always had a ton of black Sharpies with her, and would give one to each actor as they came down the line. There was never any trying to find a Sharpie at that stage door :).

Kevin, the door man at DRS was INCREDIBLY nice to me. I know a lot of people don't like him, but he has a tough job and he is very good at it. I hear the only time he gets really mean is if people are acting like fools. I would never want that job for that very reason. People probably treat him like it's his fault if someone doesn't come out or doesn't want to sign.
He took me inside one time when I was trying to catch Sherie and let me look around onstage. If I were a broadway performer, I would want him at the stage door of my theater.

The All Shook Up cast was probably so nice because they had huge orgies every night after the show
I stage-doored Rent (my Av is me w/ Matt Caplan) - the only ones I saw were Matt C. and Destan Owens (Collins) (twas a Matinee) and they were both incredibly nice. One little tip of no one knows already but the store in Shubert Alley sells Sharpies at the counter so if you're ever short.
Little story... when I Stage-doored LSOH in Boston, I began talking to Tari Kelly (Audrey.. very pleasant BTW) - all I had was a pen, so she pulled out a Sharpie from her bag and signed it, and handed it to the rest of the cast that was with her. It was neat. I have it in a frame above my desk.
I just have to add to the Kevin-the-DRS-stagedoor-guy love. Sure, he's a little...crotchety? But it really is a thankless job, and if I were a Broadway performer who faces a bunch of potential crazies every night, I'd want him on my side. And alot of the time, he's just playing with the people at the stagedoor when he's being "mean". Plus, he's nicer to you if you compliment his hat
SWEENEY TODD! The cast is very sweet. Michael makes me smile so much! He usually comes out last, but he makes sure to stay and get pictures with every person there!
Well i don't have stage-door-guy hate. I just haven't had a pleasant run-in with Kevin the DRS stage door guy.
My favorite Stage Door guy in the world is Richy, the curly-haired guy from the Palace. I met him during my love of All Shook Up. He's such a nice, great guy. Pecas is hilarious - props to popular_elphie again for mentioning her. And yes, they were armed with tons of sharpies. =)

I don't have generalized stage-door-guy hate. I know their job is crazy and they run into some real nuts. But I've just never had a great, or even pleasant, run-in with DRS stage door guy Kevin.
BUT I do love Richy (the curly-haired guy) and Pecas, from the Palace. [Props to popular_elphie for mentioning her!] Met them when I saw (and saw and saw...) All Shook Up. Greatest people ever, especially Richy. And yes, they were armed with tons of sharpies - the only day they ever didn't have enough for the actors at the stage door was the closing show. =)
Jeez! I've heard of double posting, but never quadruple posting! Lay off the "Post Message" button there honey!
The Cast Of Assassins and The Pillowman. In addition, Marc Kudisch and Denis O' Hare talked with various fans for excess of 30 minutes at both Sweet Charity and See What I Wanna See.
I loved the RENT stage door(or front door), it's so casual and I felt like I fit in, and I felt that I was more connected with the performers because there were no fences and such. But I do understand that's because the show has been there for (almost) 1o years.
Oh! Also the Movin' Out touring cast, since we were kind of the only ones there (me plus friends and family) We got to joke and talk alot with the cast members, who were extremely funny.

little shop tour cast (it was raining, so we had a pair of umbrellas one for the poster, one for the actors, they actually chatted a little with us especially when we pointed out that tari kelly's cheetah print umbrella is in character)
the throughly modern millie cast (except leslie uggams)
john tartaglia and jennifer barnhart (on the street by time square no less)
I've spent many a lovely time at the Gershwin stagedoor, outside, inside, all around. It's so fun to get nostalgic about.
