gustof, I think the general consensus was that Betsy Morgan came off too young for the role. Kate Baldwin is much more age appropriate. Morgan was also already out on tour with LES MIS when the workshop that Baldwin first became involved in occurred.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
If this is like the novel (and the movie as well) the core characters have to age about 40 years during the story. It makes sense that they would look for someone a little older to handle the later scenes. Although the film leads were all pretty young and did a credible job (particularly James Dean).

yeah i mean I personally thought she pulled it off but I can see how she could come across too young. here's to the hope that she has something coming up after les mis b/c I walked out just blown away by her and actually all three of the leads and was a bit surprised they were all replaced for the dallas production. BUT I do love these new actors and this is hands down my most anticipated show of the season. can't wait!
RIP Natasha Richardson. ~You were a light on this earth ~
I've never seen him besides on that Sondheim concert DVD, where he looked incredibly nervous. But, he sounds cute and charming on the YANK! demo. Perhaps being in "Minister's Wife" also confounded how boring you found him, which judging from all accounts on this forum was just a very boring musical.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Is Aaron Lazar still in MAMMA MIA? The casting of D'Arcy James seems to take the piece in a different direction. He also reads much older than Lazar, which isn't awful for Bick, but is interesting.
I don't know that I'd call Steggert boring, per say, but my problem with him is that he constantly makes you aware of how hard he's working and how serious he takes himself (I've gotten that sense from him in recent interviews too.) It's becomes exhausting to watch as an audience member, and it's something I really wish he'd let go of. He had such a lovely joy and spontaneity about him when he broke through in 110 IN THE SHADE, and I haven't seen anything remotely like that from him in the five years since.
The rest of the cast sure is exciting, though.

How large is Steggert's role? (I know he's not playing Jett).
I've always had a soft spot for him, but simply because ten or so years back he was one of the better younger soap opera actors when he was on All My Children--and I thought he was good in the Camelot concert telecast.
Hopefully it does get recorded. LaChiusa, lately has a good track record of being recorded, though I guess this would need a two disc set.
