Those “Othello” numbers are just gross. I don’t think they’re impressive at all. An average ticket price of $350 is not impressive to me, it’s just sad.

“Othello” number is staggering. WOW.

Gross or you just jealous. What is gross that Broadway and a play are finally earning? How many seasons do we watch shows fold and complain, and then say oh investors aren’t going to keep funding.

We do this all the time. And now finally those investors and a show are doing well. I say good for them.

Two stars? In one play! Wow!  I loved it both times. And hope they keep going!

Jealous? Of what? Not sure at all what you mean by that.

Last week before the spring slate really heats up. Happy trails to Brandon Victor Dixon over at HELL’S KITCHEN.

Re OTHELLO: if there is enough demand for something, people will simply pay hefty prices for it. Other celeb-driven shows are in the same boat, as there are folx that simply want to stargaze and don’t care about what’s happening onstage.

Admittedly not a great start for BVSC, but MINCEMEAT should go up quite a bit when they get the inevitable love letters next week.

No slight to the new cast members whatsoever, but SIX and HADESTOWN aren’t long for this world on Broadway. New tenants are being thrown around for the two houses as it stands. GATSBY, HK, and JULIET are on steadier ground but their futures are uncertain too. The latter needs some more B-tier stunt casting that builds up to Kelly C and Guarini eventually closing the musical.

Well, I’ll be. That bird really did it.

Are the people who post in this thread even Broadway fans? Man, so cranky and snarky every week. Be happy Broadway had a solid week and so many people are willing to shell out big bucks for a play. It’s not a competition. The more plays and musicals that do well, the better. Very strange.

Why are they gross? If people refused to pay that much for Othello tickets, they would cost less and they did during the presale. Dorian Gray tried to charge similar high prices during their own presale but failed, so the prices went down significantly. Glengarry had very affordable tickets for weeks up until about a month ago. Some shows have trouble giving away their tickets for free. It's supply and demand, nothing personal. What exactly makes you sad? That the producers charge that much and people are happily paying up for the luxury of seeing 2 A-list celebs live on stage?

I don’t think BVSC is stumbling out of the gate as you seem to portray it. For a new musical with no stars relying mostly on the music, I think it’s selling at respectable numbers. This was also one of the off-Broadway darlings that’s coming in this season and word of mouth has been quite good insofar.

MINCEMEAT is staying sold out and that’s pretty good considering this is also getting butts in the seats with more accessible pricing and also the rabid word of mouth.

If anything, REDWOOD seems to be losing steam rather quickly and the onslaught of new shows coming in isn’t going to help its chances for any awards or higher grosses. Based on how competitive the field it is, Idina may even be shut out of the Tony contest.

It was just my opinion, people. I’m entitled to it. You’re entitled to yours. This is a message board where we share different…opinions. The “does he even like theater” thing is ridiculous. No, I hate it and I never go to see anything because it’s just the worst. Give me a break.

Congratulations to Othello, what a number! Can’t wait to see the new show numbers previewing in the next few weeks. Redwood declining isn’t surprising at all, unfortunately, it’s just not a great show.

This article is a little silly:

https://nypost.com/2025/03/08/entertainment/broadway-ticket-prices-are-out-of-control-denzel-washingtons-show-is-charging-900-for-row-m/

Only 6 shows had an average price of $125 or higher last week. That's a totally healthy mix of pricepoints across a wide range of shows. And between rush/lotto, TDF, TKTS, advance discount codes, and other deals, there are lots of opportunities to buy tickets to shows for under $100.

Yes, of course the OTHELLO prices are high. But that's what the market can bear. A commercial business entity is not a charity. Every show does not need to be for every person. As always, if the tickets don't sell at that top price, the producers will lower them.

Jordan, people defending obscenely high ticket prices on here will always be bizarre to me. Don't engage with them, they love how high tickets prices are getting and if you disagree you're a jealous fool.

What an idiotic, twisted take. Nobody is defending high Broadway prices. You can walk into a box office of half of the currently playing shows and buy a $35-49 rush ticket easily, without even having to wait in line. People choose to pay that much for Othello. Don't remember such vitriol when Wicked made 5 mil per week after the movie came out, instead it was celebrated.

So many simpletons here. If productions are charging high ticket prices—and people are paying it—that means Broadway is making money. And if Broadway is making money, that means it’s likely to stick around.  Really hope you can wrap your tiny brain around that concept. It’s hard, but keep trying.

You're both idiots. If you think A List stars making over 300K each a week is good for the Broadway community then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, it's good. People are flying to NYC from all over the world to see 2 big stars and many of these tourists will make a longer trips out their visits and see more shows that struggle to sell tickets. My god, this is not that difficult to understand, is it?

I’m not sure where the “Clarkson and Guarini will close out & Juliet” rumor came from (Oracle just making things up again?), but considering that it’s been floating around for nearly a year and was supposed to have already happened, maybe it’s time to stop repeating it?

And the majority of other very hard working performers are making Equity minimum while the producers rake in obscene amounts of cash from rich people. Lovely system!

I mean on one hand it allows producers to make a neat profit that they would hopefully use to invest in future (riskier) Broadway shows and it does help employ other non A list stars and also keep a buzz going about theater, but there's certainly no guarantee that it's necessarily helpful to the Broadway community as a whole.  And when people see that the average ticket price of a show is $300+ it sometimes generates a false narrative that that's the case for ALL shows which can lead to lower interest in Broadway overall.  But that's a lot of ifs which may not necessarily be true all the time.

The other part of the equation is that it's better for the production itself to charge the high prices rather than letting ticket scalpers rake in the profit on them, which leads to a whole other discussion about how resale tickets shouldn't be allowed to be sold for more than face value, but it's not like the government cares about regulating something like that.  Of course what I'm sure people would like to see is more affordable ticket initiatives (yes I'm aware they have lottery), but then we get the discussion of entitlement and how theater is a privilege not a right etc.

& Juliet won't get Clarkson.   Kelly would CREATE a role if she were to do Broadway - not jump into the basics of & JULIET.   She doesn't "like acting".

Her Vegas residency picks up on her time off from The Kelly Clarkson Show - July through November.   She's not doing & Juliet.

Maybe Guarini would though.

When every one of these hardworking performers is able to bring in 2.8 mil weekly, then you can complain about the unfair system.

The shows wouldn't exist without them, dear.
