I wonder if Netflix is willing to pour money into ST until the 5th season comes out so it’ll be relevant again. If not, I don’t see a world it lasts much longer.

Boop’s audience numbers are up but their gross is almost ten percent down.

Just in Time is doing just great. Curves closing notice any day now I’d imagine.
I'm not sure what they can do to turn things around for Real Women Have Curves. I'm so mad that it didn't get a best musical nomination. It deserved it and needed it. Absolutely the most delightful surprise of the season, and it's a story that is needed right now. RWHC and Boop could both close the week of the Tonys unfortunately. I think Smash will prob be able to hold on until Labor Day.
I don’t see Stranger Things packing it up anytime soon.

It's simply not good enough.

What a horrible week, even nominated shows plunged or had only a minuscule uptick in grosses... I think very low consumer confidence is catching up to Broadway. Wealthy people who are not affected by layoffs and rising prices are paying up to see celebs but the vast majority of people aren't spending on the rest of the shows.
I’m not sure if the Tony nominations have had an impact just yet. I know for shows like Dead Outlaw, Floyd Collins, and Boop, the nominations did just buy them some time. (Yes, I’m aware FC is a limited run, but can still fold if the numbers are bad.)
STRANGER THINGS and CURSED CHILD are not going to sustain with those grosses. I marvel at the drop for ST since I thought it could’ve been a show that was a genuine hit for the Marquis which (aside from Elf) hasn’t had a true standalone hit in years. (Beetlejuice and The Wiz both were buoyed by previous productions/tours)

Tourism is down all around. It’s not looking pretty. Tony nominations or not.
Last week was always going to trend down a little bit (week beginning 4/21 is coming off of easter, and a couple states push their spring break to this week. So there is still a small uptick in travel numbers). And we probably wont see numbers shoot back up until the end of the month.
BUT some shows are posting troubling numbers regardless of these travel trends. Orville and Eva are not pulling in nearly enough audiences to float the astronomical operating costs of Cabaret. With Floyd Collins also not even hitting 70% capacity, it's clear that Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan fan bases alone are not going to bring in those record breaking grosses (it was both of them together AND a flashy recognizable title with Gatsby). & Juliet is posting a pretty dicey number, was there a cast change Im forgetting about that would lead to the steep drop off? And I know Dead Outlaw is a small musical and a small-ish house. But the fact that after it received a bunch of rave reviews and a decent Tony nomination haul (w/ Best Musical), it still is posting an average ticket price of $67? Yikes. It speaks to little public interest, and outside of a Best Musical win, I don't know that there is a path to longevity here.
Stranger Things is an odd one. I have no doubt in my mind that Netflix will eventually film it and stream it but I’m curious if they might want to do that ASAP and then bank on a “you’ve seen it on the small screen now see it live in person” approach. Because looking at ticket sales coming up, they’re doing horrible.

Don't forget, over 5 million people will start getting their wages, tax refunds and SS checks garnished next month for outstanding student loans. College educated, middle age and older people demographic that tends to attend live theater. As alarmist as it sounds, I think many people will start prioritizing being able to buy food and remaining housed at this point. Given that white collar well paying jobs are extremely hard to land nowadays, tourism and entertainment industries will suffer immensely (already are).
Flying back from London yesterday, the flight was nearly empty (after an oversold plane heading there) and I was talking with one of the flight attendants who said she’s noticed most flights to the USA are like this, now. She said “i don’t know if it’s political….” and I laughed and said of course it is and she goes “Yeah ok i didn’t know if i could say it to you or not but yes nobody wants to go there now”
Gonna be VERY interesting to see what summer tourism numbers look like this year.
I have a feeling this summer is going to be rough for a lot of shows. Especially some long running shows that haven't been doing well lately (Hadestown, Harry Potter, Book of Mormon, Chicago). Foreigners aren't coming into the USA this year for their annual summer outings. And then there's the fear of a recession right around the corner.

Can BOOP or RWHC even hang on until the Tony's?
Which is interesting because Stranger Things in London is an all out hit. But I think London tends to enjoy spectacle over the US.

Yup. It seems that only shows with recognizable Star names will do well. As we see now. For shows looking to make money, they should all strive really hard to get names in their shows, in some way. I know it’s harsh to say, but it’s the only way these days. Sad. Unfortunate.

That, but also it’s in a much smaller theatre and likely much cheaper to run.

Or average people are opting to see 1 show starring a celebrity rather than 2-3 shows they aren’t familiar with.

Yup I was hoping RWHC would get a NYT critics pick or a best musical Tony nom.
