Absolutely the most delightful surprise of the season, and it's a story that is needed right now. RWHC and Boop could both close the week of the Tonys unfortunately. I think Smash will prob be able to hold on until Labor Day."
Yup I was hoping RWHC would get a NYT critics pick or a best musical Tony nom.

Those Stranger Things numbers are just bad for a production of that magnitude. I'm sure it'll hang around until season 5 premieres on Netflix so they can bank off of it but will it work? I'm really starting to believe the Marquis theater is cursed...
RWHC and Boop are doomed imo

It doesn't help that the show sucks.
I would say that Netflix has really bungled the timing of Stranger Things. The property is popular for sure, one of their top titles. But just being extremely popular is different than being beloved enough of an IP to get everyone running to plop down hundreds of dollars on it. And the show has been gone for a LONG time. It's been years since Season 4 dropped and Season 5 is happening "sometime this summer." It would have been smarter to either have The First Shadow debut just after the release of Season 4, while the hype was fresh. Or, if they couldn't get it ready until now, at least do everything in their power to bump up the Season 5 premiere. That way they could bill it as "you've gotta see this play to get ready for Season 5 when it drops on May 15!" Either scenario would have helped lure in more of the casual fans to the theater, at least for a time.
It is a little too soon for Tony noms to have any impact so I wouldn't have expected that but still a rough week.
RWHC will definitely be next to go, maybe as soon as this week or next. It's too bad but I think it just got swallowed up by the end of season glut. It probably would have benefited from opening even a bit earlier.
Boop won't be far behind. Maybe an early to mid June closing. The capacity increase means nothing if the grosses are down. Dead Outlaw will certainly play through the Tonys but it's not looking good either. Smash and Mincemeat should make it through the summer.
Stranger Things is really interesting... I'm surprised it's not doing better. Certainly not going to be the next Harry Potter but with the final season coming this year and Netflix money behind it, they'll definitely keep giving it a go.
All time lows for Cabaret and Harry Potter and lowest since the Best Musical win for The Outsiders. Also the lowest ever for The Book of Mormon except during the Omicron wave in Jan 2022.

Based on what? Do you have facts? Any numbers? I walk the streets and see foreign visitors everywhere. Noticing lots of visitors from Italy, Spain, and France. My question is why. I’m glad they’re here and spending money, but ‘murica would be the last place I’d visit.

Late spring also isn't a heavy travel time- spring breaks are done, school is in session and won't be out for another several weeks and there are no major travel holidays until Memorial Day. Hopefully college graduations in a month and the summer holidays will bring people into the city.
But Trump's rhetoric and concerns over air travel - we have air traffic controllers telling the public not to fly into Newark at all right now- are surely not helping, especially with foreign tourists.

I expect Dorian Gray to recoup very soon if it hasn't already. It was capitalized at $8M in its filing, which was long before the 2-week extension was announced, and as of 5/4 it has made $9.4M. I am curious how much expenses increased with the extension.

I think MINCEMEAT is doing fine. It’s sure to pick up an award or two and it’s not a show that’s needed to be heavily discounted since it rode into NYC on a wave of stellar British press and built buzz by making many seats accessible in price from the jump.
I think many shows are also riding out the storm of the three major star driven productions (OTHELLO, GLENGARRY, and GNGL) taking up all the oxygen in the room. When those close, there is a potential $9-10 million/week that’s up for grabs for shows that survive. However, my gut feeling is that once those shows leave, the money will (in large part) go with them, and the boom we’re having right now will fall into a bust by August.

Those aren’t facts or hard numbers. It’s an article packed with mights and maybes. Hell, I can do the same thing.
I’ve been applying my eye test for weeks…and I see plenty of foreign families and tour groups on every street in the city.

Don't forget, over 5 million people will start getting their wages, tax refundsand SS checks garnished next month for outstanding student loans. College educated, middle age and older people demographic that tends to attend live theater. As alarmist as it sounds, I think many people will start prioritizingbeing able to buy food and remaining housed at this point. Given that white collar well paying jobs are extremely hard to land nowadays, tourism and entertainment industries will suffer immensely (already are)."
People who don't pay their student loans are financially irresponsible. They will still eat out and go to overpriced IMAX movies and theater. They will use their credit cards just like they have been.
Just like those irresponsible people on food stamps who buy red meat and name brand foods when they deserve absolutely the lowest quality of everything, right?

Nobody will go to a theater or eat out by using credit cards if there's no stable monthly paycheck coming in next month (to pay that CC bill) or if it's garnished by the government. Mass government, tech and finance layoffs will have a horrible ripple effect on economy. Oh, and those phantom manufacturing jobs are never coming back. At least make yourself familiar with the current state of white collar job market.

What layoffs ? The job scene is fine - same unemployment numbers basically - prices in NYC are awful - but NYC has the highest rate of inflation in the country and New Yorkers don’t make up the Broadway base , it’s all tourists , who goto these shows

It is absolutely NOT “all tourists who go to these shows”. Do you think everyone on this board is a tourist? Do you think NYC residents and those in the tri-state area do not attend Broadway shows?

Speculation you read from a news article based on what one individual says - is not necessarily reality- I work right in the theater , at a popular show - it’s all tourists - 60% from Europe , Spain , Canada, France , Italy , Eastern Europe and a lot of mid westerners and New Englanders - have you been to the city ? tourism is strong if not stronger than last summer - and I’ve been working in theater for 20 years - 2022 and 2023 were not good years for tourism - last year and tho so year have been strong . There is no Canadian lash out against America - I speak to all these tourists - the TV is not reality- 90% of normal people don’t care the least about what CNN tells you people care about - nobody is shaking in their boots over deportations and tariffs , Niobody but devoted political junkies care about any of the things the news is pumping into your psyche, normal people do not care , they want to have fun and do things and not worry about tariffs lol and ICE or whatever fear the TV and The NY Times is pumping out

Lots of broad generalizations here. What do you know about “normal people”? What do you know about tariffs? I can’t tell if you are a troll, an idiot, or an idiot troll.

I work in a theater - I see the crowds- it’s 80% tourists - foreign and from other parts of the country - very few New Yorkers goto Broadway shows - especially from the 5 boroughs - it’s just reality - it’s not 1950 , I know a New Yorker when I see one - im a 4th generation New Yorker - very few goto Broadway
Yes I challenge anyone here to name a New Yorker who goes to the theater. I bet you can’t.

What theatre do you work in? Wicked? The Lion King? Sure, those are mainly tourists. New Yorkers are most definitely attending the newer shows. To state otherwise is just lying.
