I feel like it's a combination of a poor choice of theatre, the assumed content of the play at face value, and the fact that it was a VERY late entry into the season with little fanfare beforehand.

I also don't see any advertising for it on the major stations in NYC - probably because the the title is a little problematic (although that could be abridged like they did with The Motherf***** with the Hat a decade ago).

Hugh came back from the Wednesday matinee on. So 7 shows for him and 1 for Max (Tuesday).

Presumably, the box office figures will likely go back to pre-covid levels ( around $ 3.4 M + per week) by next week. To-date, the show has registered $79,486,584.26 at the box office (per Playbill). The show opened for previews on Dec 20, 2021 but had to close for 10 days when Hugh was first infected with covid-19.

They were already back to 3.2 in the current grosses.

The POTUS problems:

1) These are not bankable stars, as many of us have said from the beginning. They rushed this to Broadway with whoever was available. Even with Lucy Liu in Suzy N's part (as initially planned) it wouldn't have made a dollar more than it is now. This is a bigger problem than the limited lead-time before previews.

2) It's an awful title. People expect something preachy or historically relevant, when the play really isn't that. Even titling it something along the lines of "Seven Women Trying to Keep One Dumbass Alive" might have been better. It's on the producers for not exerting their control and having the title changed.

3) It's just not a very good play. It's funny and well-performed, but it's complete fluff, and that's not enough to sell tickets these days.

There's been no shortage of press coverage and mixed-to-favorable reviews about the play. The general public simply does not care to spend proper money on this title and these actors.

I mean, people have been saying that for weeks and here we are. I can't imagine The Minutes and POTUS won't finish out their runs with only a few weeks left (especially POTUS, as I'm sure the Shuberts don't want their flagship empty during the hot tourist months).

Paradise Square seems to have defied all prognostication and financial common sense - so it seems like a fruitless effort to actually bet they will close any time soon since we've been doing that since late April/early May when the 10 Tony Award nominations did diddly-squat for the show itself.

I’ve heard producers have been considering pushing back closing based on 1) popular demand, and 2) the fact that they want to end up with a longer run than Dear Evan Hansen.

I thought Paradise Square was asked to give up the Ethel Barrymore to make way for Amost Famous.

Did Almost famous change its booking to another Shubert house?

Except they don't need to extend in order to outrun DEH. According to IBDB, as of June 19, 2022 Come From Away has played 25 previews and 1,550 performances to Dear Evan Hansen's 21 previews and 1,466 performances. And with Come From Away currently scheduled to close two weeks after Dear Evan Hansen, a longer run is pretty much an inevitability (barring any COVID cancellations and/or any other unforeseen circumstances).

Correct. Shockingly, real adults don't open or close shows based on "pettiness".
