MHE is unfortunately running out of steam.

The floor dropped out of MHE. It has barely made its weekly nut in past weeks - the majority of its weeks, it has not. I wonder if a tour is even viable with the set having to be redone for the road. This has the looks of a big financial mess ...
Speaking of losses - Celebrity Autobiography. Took my kids to see it last weekend on comps. Not good or worth the time even with one of the better groups.

Our annual summertime culling begins with FALLEN ANGELS, which concluded its planned limited run on Sunday and also live-streamed a performance during its final week.
Happy trails as well to James Monroe Iglehart, who had himself a nice stint in & JULIET.
We will see the full effect of the Tonys (if there was any) next week. Until then, the nominated musicals seem to be in meh-to-okay shape.

Absolutely salivating at bad news for your nemesis Michael Arden. How on brand for you, Mr. Coffee.

Wow, I didn't imagine The Fear of 13 being such a flop financially, but it's not a good show, so I get it. Sadly without Darren, MHE will be gone by Summer's end at the latest. It will have a really success tour, and he was always the draw on Broadway anyways.

The Fear of 13 really turned out to be a bomb huh?
Also, it's become very apparent that while the first film boosted Wicked, the second film did meaningful damage.
Thoughts on upcoming closings (not rooting for any except BOM, so don't start).
Closing Imminent: Two Strangers
Labor Day Closings: &Juliet, Buena Vista Social Club, Titanique (may just fulfill it's full run, but won't extend again)
End of the Year Closings: Maybe Happy Ending, Just In Time, Mincemeat (if not Labor Day), Stranger Things, Book of Mormon (wishful thinking), Gatsby

Oh, Maybe Happy Ending is not gonna last long with these numbers.
And I'm kinda gagged at how much word of mouth affected Dog Day and how much Brody was not enough to sell Fear of 13.
Salesman numbers are incredible.

I somehow missed that Gad and Rannells are going back into "The Book of Mormon" interested to see the sales from that. I wonder if it's a test to see. Have them do this week, see how sales are, announce a closing and have them come back to close out the show. I'm not rooting for that to be the case, but it just seems strategic. I also loved them this Sunday and enjoyed hearing them talk about it on Seth Meyers.

Time for six to take stage 1 at new world and replace the slowly dying heathers (which had only four rows filled on Sunday)

Tickets are being sold for the tour already and most stops are part of the respective cities’ Broadway season packages. The tour will be fine.

I saw Fear of 13 Sunday and huge sectims in the mezz were empty. I actually liked it though, but felt dumb for paying expensive prices when I could have easily gotten something for half off or more. But that’s the curse of coming in from out of town.

Nice growth for Tony winners Schmigadoon, The Lost Boys, and Cats: The Jellicle Ball. Hopefully the Best Musical win can boost sales for the first show next week so they can really start making money. The latter two had great performances that imo properly showcased the productions and will hopefully continue the upward trend in sales.
The nominees I'm most worried about are Two Strangers and Titanique. Two Strangers feels like they've been hitting a sales ceiling for a long time. They could probably keep these types of numbers up through the summer, but they will be clobbered in the fall once new offerings start opening. Their Tonys performance was good, but I think the transition between the two songs was a bit awkward if you dont already know the story, so not sure if it translates to a box office bump. Titanique's nearly $1 million weekly breakeven is still totally baffling to me. I guess its a few star salaries plus expensive music royalties? But a show like this simply shouldn't be this expensive. They had an abysmal Tony performance, easily the worst of the telecast, with off key singing and a package that didn't really capture what makes the show special. So I don't see them being able to improve these numbers. I think both musicals are looking at a Labor Day closing at the latest.

For those doomcasting Two Strangers, they only had 7 shows last week, yet were only down by $17k. That's an average of $82,620 per performance, which is their best in months ($74,442 last week, $81,670 the week before, which was their highest grossing week since February).

If battery-operated robots start producing steam…we got a problem. 😆
CATS got a nice little bump from having PAC NYC buy out the Wednesday night show for their benefit.
I was talking to a producer friend of mine at Titanique and it seems like the cast is firmly planted in the show, even Cox and Parsons, and don’t seem inclined to leave, so it may be possible we many not see any replacement casts for a while - should the should live so long

Thanks for the info, I think it will stick around, it's such a great show.

It's not doomcasting to look at facts (i.e. grosses since the beginning of the run) and know that it is not financially tenable. There's nothing that will give it an organic bump after not winning any awards on Sunday and a pretty unremarkable performance on the telecast. It won't have legs over the summer with tourists. This isn't a personal slight, it's just how the business works regardless of how much you love the show.

When a show is up week to week and hits its highest average ticket price in over three months, and you declare "Closing Imminent!" that's not looking at facts. That's doomcasting.

You're funny. No, it's not, I think it's interesting people don't know how expensive MHE is to run still. There are facts. It does not make me happy MHE is not doing well. That's insane. Our whole family enjoyed the show for what it is. Two of us saw it overseas before the Arden $$ beef up for Broadway that will sink investors. I just don't know how it runs on the road with little time between cities. It will need massive scaling back. however, the previous award winning iteration for show and director, prior to Arden, was scaled back and worked well as a show without all of the "extra" financial excess the Broadway show brought to it. A curiosity. Maybe it will be close enough or NY'er to see it on tour.
And that's Ms. CoffeeBreak.

This is exactly what happens when shows have Tony nominations leading into the Tonys....are you new? Saying Two Strangers is not long for this world is not a novel concept, especially on this board. They needed to win the Tony to survive. They didn't, they won't survive. Argue with a wall.

I will say this in support of CoffeeBreak's comments. How the hell did the producers let Arden spend so much on the physical design for a time 4 person musical (right this minute I can't even remember what the 4th person does). MHE is a tiny show that was going to find an audience based primarily on their book, music, basic direction and cast. Noone leaves the theatre 'humming the sets', to quote a cliche.
I enjoyed the production values of MHE from my center seats, but I was pretty aggravated a second time, when my seats were on the side. I believe I would have loved the show even if it had simpler production values. And I venture that every regional theatre in the country is eventually going to do a great job presenting this to enthusiastic audiences, while working with tight budget constraints. (I would also say that I would have liked it more with simpler production values when sitting on the side).
Given how hard its road to sellout business was, it is wrong on so many levels if this loses money, particulrly if it loses a lot of its investment because they could not come up with production values appropriate to the tiny story.

Reading the messages on this particular subject today has been a little depressing. I am reading (on this and other streams) opinions on what is likely to close and when...for a lot of shows. Couple this with the incredibly limited number of productions that have been announced for fall openings, and one does conclude that there is a good chance that a lot of theatres are going to be empty at the same time, and that much of what remains is going to be the old war horses and whatever the non-profits produce.
I have been travelling to NYC two, and occasionally three) times per year, as I travel to and from my snowbird location. Right now, for the first time ever, I am seriously considering cancelling my October visit (the 10/20 - 10/25 date is inflexible due to a wedding as one end and commitments on the other. The new productions announced that will be open during that period honestly hold very little interest, with Other Desert Cities being the only thing that sparks some interest, but not a whole lot. (I can't stand Allison Janney, who IMO gives the same performance in everything she appears in). I don't need to come to NYC to see the war horses, most of which hit Tampa or Sarasota every few years). What's left? Any of the limited engagements that I was forced to miss will be long closed and I have no interest in seeing any of the open-ended runs that I intentionally missed.
Does anyone think there are any other shows arriving by mid-October that have not yet been officially announced. Seems like we have normally heard about them by now.

I think Kad made a similar point recently, but the reported weekly running costs for this production are about $480,000, so it's the only new musicals that's actually been making money most weeks. On paper, it should be the least endangered of the lot.
