Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/31/25
Posted: 9/2/25 at 6:34pm
Labor Day weekend provided one final summer surge this year.
Happy trails to PURPOSE, Darren Criss (for now), Tshidi Manye, the entire principal cast of HADESTOWN, Elijah Johnson, and the first OBC departure over at DEATH BECOMES HER - ensemblist Sarah Meahl.
Excellent first three previews for ART.

For someone who knows how this works, if Death Becomes Her holds these grosses, how long until it would recoup?

Purpose really had a nice run. It played well through the whole summer.
It was a solid week overall. Now for those post Labor Day grosses. Hope shows hold on well.

That’s a few extra bucks for Cabaret while Billy’s been away.

Having only 28 Broadway shows running is likely helping some of the struggling shows currently.

“Stranger Things” OOF. I’m glad they have all that money behind them to keep them open. I’m curious if the new season can save this show. Interestingly, “Operation Mincemeat” seems to be the recent West End transfer that’s actually doing well. “Sunset” didn’t recoup, “Cabaret” sure as hell won’t and “Stranger Things” is up in the air.

Operation mincemeat has to keep running cause I have two past date tickets I need to use at some point.

Let's say they are making 200 a week. Thats a million every 5 weeks. 10.4 million a year profit. 30 million budget (probably closer to 35) but thats around 3 years to recoup.

That is a really amazing end to a very successful run for Purpose. A drama in Broadway’s smallest house with no A-List stars or spectacle making over $1 million is incredible. Sure to be a staple at regional houses for years to come.

Thank you!! I appreciate this

Cabaret really did drop like a rock when Orville and Eva left didn't it?

Something in my gut tells me PURPOSE broke the house record for the Hayes. To break a million in a 597-seat house is absolutely bonkers.
Meanwhile, Stranger Things has been on life support for months, even with the Tonys, but Netflix and those deep pockets keep everything running. CABARET remains dire, and that little bump is probably more due to the holiday than Billy’s absence. I think we’re likely to hear sometime this week what the final fate of the show will be since now there are rumors from staff around the theatre that ATG is trying to term Billy and bring someone in to salvage the last few weeks.

If Purpose broke the house record, I would imagine they would've trumpeted that accomplishment, no?
Re: Cabaret - Porter is now in a period of continuous absence in which the Production contract would allow for his contract to be terminated without much penalty. He would be required to be paid for the time he's missed and that's all- no full payout unless he's got a rider with more generous terms. But they would need to secure and rehearse a replacement, which would be more added expense to a show that has been in the red for months and likely hasn't even been hitting even half its weekly running costs for over a month. But hey, it's not my money that's being burned and Marisha and the rest of the company deserve their checks and health and pension weeks, so whatever.

I continue to be mystified with Chicago's attendance in the 60's percentage. I cannot recall another year when their grosses were that low at this point in time. If there's any consolation, it outgrossed Cabaret. Hopefully Mira Sorvino will prove to be a much needed boost. I was looking at the ticket prices for the Jeff Ross show. Who on EARTH would pay $194 to see that show? It boggles the mind.

This is the problem with these massive-budget shows... +/- 200 a week profit is going to take forever to chip away. It's a better position to be in than most shows in town! But it means they can't afford to drop much. Same with shows like GREAT GATSBY and HELL'S KITCHEN.
Investors could still be made whole thanks to tour royalties, licensing, international, and other income streams, but those are slow trickles.
All that said, I am impressed by the resilience of DBH, because when I saw it I really didn't think the masses would go for it, and the movie isn't THAT big.

It’s all about the tik tok. Great Gatsby and Death Becomes Her went viral on the tik tok

People **** talk the score (I love it) but that cast recording was MADE for TikTok.

I wonder which will be the bigger sell, Mira Sorvino in Chicago or Romy & Michele: The Musical off-broadway.

Pretty great for ART with $668K for only 3 performances. This week could be close to $1.5M??
Posted: 9/3/25 at 2:34pm
Death Becomes her probably not more than $25m capitalization. the range right now is more like $18m-$25m
Posted: 9/3/25 at 2:45pm
Per the Death Becomes Her SEC filing it was capitalized at 29 to 31.5 million.
Edit: Wait, are you saying what they have left to pay off? That seems about right.

Nope. well over 30 on Death. It went up post filing. Purple Rain over 30, Dolly 28+, Wanted 23+, Lost Boys 25+, Queen of Versailles over 25, under 20 is either a small show or really good producing or both.

These numbers are not sustainable and I'm not convinced all of these shows will open.
