What are some Broadway songs that could be sold as a single (maybe pop?), and it could get away without being labeled as a "Broadway song"?

"This Is The Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde has become a single in some senses.

Also, I'm thinking "Stars and Moon" from Songs For A New World.

Many ALW songs are released as singles before the shows open to generate interest.

Otherwise, I can't think of any off to top of my head.

haha

I think a lot of Rent could but "Without You" stands out...oh, and "I'll Cover You" would make a nice duet.

Already, from Brooklyn I could see Kelly Clarkson singing "Once Upon A Time"

hmmm I don't know what else. MAYBE with a few words changed some songs from TL5Y?

In the right crowd, "Shiksa Goddess" could be a hit!

Out Tonight from RENT.

Elaborate Lives from AIDA.

Once In A While from RHS.

"Seasons of Love" from Rent was a big radio hit.

"Are You There?" from BARE could easily be its big breakout hit. That is, if radio stations didn't mind playing a song with a young gay man singing about his boyfriend.

"On My Own" from Les Miz enjoys a lot of attention, and I'm surprised no one has recorded it yet for the radio, because everyone seems to love this song.

"And I Am Telling You" (from DREAMGIRLS) spent 4 weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B chart and several weeks in the Top 40 of the Pop charts, peaking at #24 -- the only non-cover single taken directly from a Broadway cast album to hit number one on ANY Billboard Chart in the last three decades.

This was posted by Margo in the Dreamgirls appreciation thread.

I agree. ON MY OWN needs to be done as a pop single mayby even with Frances Ruffelle. She did the pop single of Stranger to the Rain so she could do this one too.

Clearly none of the songs from Boy From Oz or Mamma Mia re: Broadway Songs That Could Be Pop Singles

I think "I've Known Where I've Been" could hit the gospel/soul charts

Both "I know Him So Well" and especially "One Night In Bangok" from CHESS were quite the radio hits in their time.

So can DON'T CRY FOR ME, ARGENTINA. Actually, I really loved Madonna's remix of it. Takes me back to latin dance clubs.

Wasn't "Written in the Stars" released before "Aida" opened with Elton John and Leanne Rhimes(sp)? I remember they did change some of the words actually.

I also agree with "Are You There" and "Once Upon a Time". I don't know why but I think Christina Aguliera would do a great job with "Once Upon a Time".

What about "My Strongest Suit" from "Aida"? Or "Stranger in This World" from "Taboo"? Actually, I can see a lot of the score of "Taboo" as singles.

I'm shocked nobody said "Defying Gravity".

"Written in the Stars" was released as pop single by Elton John and LeAnn Rimes. While it is occasionally heard on Adult Contemporary radio or on the syndicated "Delilah" show, it promptly went nowhere chart-wise.

Yup. You're right about Written in the Stars, I'm just not sure when it was released in relation to the show's opening. But for some odd reason, I think Elton sang what (in the show) is Aida's part and Leanne sang Radames'. That always bugged me, but I guess it's because I'm such a die-hard fan of the show.

"Midnight Radio" from Hedwig. That would be the "lighter swaying" song of the year.

Forgot one: "Last Night of the World" from Miss Saigon. It's written to sound like a (great) radio love song ("A sooooong...played on a solo saxophone..."). I think it would sound wonderful on the actual radio.

Also: "Origin of Love" from Hedwig. Such a beautiful song.

Yes, "Written in the Stars" was a big hit with Elton John and Leanne Rhymes. The lyrics were slightly different - not character-specific. It was released a long time before AIDA opened on Broadway, though (I'm thinking almost a year before).

I love "Origin of Love" but I think it would go over a lot of people's heads if it was realeased. "What is this talk about spliting people and all this honkadoo?"

It would have to be released to rock & alternative stations, not AC or Top-40. I think it'll stand nicely next to Pink Floyd, Tori Amos and Ben Folds, don't you think?

A few more from Hedwig (which I love so much, I just might pop it into the DVD player this afternoon):

- "Midnight Radio", as mentioned.
- "Wicked Little Town", Hedwig's version.
- "Tear Me Down": man, this would sound AMAZING on the radio.

I also want to hear the phenomenal "Angry Inch" on the radio, but I doubt even the rock/alternative stations would play THAT.
