I need a good Broadway song for a goodbye slideshow. Being Alive is the first to come to mind but you guys may have other suggestions.
It's pretty predictable and corny, but when I graduated college we used "For Good" from Wicked in a picture slideshow we made. But the lyrics even had the people who didn't know the show tearing up a bit.
-"For Good" from Wicked
-"The Goodbye Song" from ...Spelling Bee
-"Find My Way" from Legally Blonde
-"Anything Can Happen" from Mary Poppins
-"Song of Purple Summer" or "Those You've Known" from Spring Awakening.

forgot the song title... but use the end credits song from the Hairspray movie soundtrack
and not a showtune... but THE JOURNEY by Lea Salonga is pretty good... from her US debut album
Unless someone has died, Those You've Known seems far too depressing for such an event. It's not a showtune, but the song I've heard express the "goodbye" sentiments the best is Greenday's Good Riddance (The Time of Your Life).Give it a listen. It has a pretty melody and great lyrics.
"What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line is always a good one.
adamgreer, I feel as if Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance) is a bit over used to the point of it being cliche. I mean, I do agree that it does relay the message pretty darn good but I feel like it is used at every graduation in the country. In all honesty There was a year a couple of years back where four of my different friends were graduating and it was four graduations I had to go to. Each of them, played that song. It was by the fourth one that I was wondering if they all coordinated the song that they were going to be playing.
Well, Time of Your Life would be a terrible song since it is being really sarcastic.
If it's a graduation of sorts, The Kid Inside from Is There Life After High School? works well.
"Contact" from Rent or "Tunnel of Love" from Side Show.
My vote goes to "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound Of Music.
I guess it couldn't be a funeral service or "Being Alive" would be particularly ironic.
I'd like to know what the situation is. Is a friend moving? Going off to college? That would be really helpful to us so we can make appropriate suggestions.
I'm with Eris..I think it depends on the situation.
Some others for considering:
"A New Life" - Jekyll & HYDE
"I Will Never Leave You" - SideShow
"Anything Can Happen" - Wonderland (released on one of Eder's solo albums years ago)
"The Friend You Were to Me" - Napoleon, The Musical
Just don't use ding dong the witch is dead if it is in fact a funeral service. I don't care how much you hate the person that is still bad taste.

Don't use the Cell Block Tango at a funeral either.
I used "A New Life" for a goodbye cd for a friend who was moving and starting a new job

For once I agree with Winston completely. Cliche DOES NOT even begin to cover it.
"Louder Than Words" from tick, tick...BOOM!
At my college graduation this past May, the English department had a HUGE, epic slide show (like they do every year). It alternates between songs and readings by the professors. One of the songs? "What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?"

I don't know if this will apply but " You'll Never Get Away From Me " from Gypsy..
maybe with some specially written lyrics ! Just a thought!

Please don't use "For Good." I have a theory Schwartz was commissioned to write that song for high school graduations.

"Our Time" from "Merrily We Roll Along". Have used it for just such a thing. And the orchestration has a haunting quality which works really well with slides or video. Also, lyrically, particularly because of the later verses where it talks about "Years from now, we'll remember and we'll look back..." Just a thought.
