CABARET sets closing with Porter and Wallace to star

I do think there is a potential Black history interpretation of the Emcee (not that you really need one to cast Black people but I know others think you do) but it's funny to hear Billy's take on what he thinks that interpretation is. It doesn't feel real or thought out and more something he's saying to justify his own casting. Which he doesn't really need to do? It's all very strange and it sucks to see someone work so hard to get where they are and then turn into whatever is he's doing these days.

Per the ATG ticketing site, it looks like Porter is now not appearing in any performance until September 9.

An absence of this length, whatever the reason, really ought to be formally announced.

And he's out a week in October just before it closes. What a joke.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

That was a pre-determined and announced absence when he was brought on- I don't see anything wrong with that if the producers accommodated it.

But if the production now knows Porter will not be returning until at least 9/9, it should announce that.

That is really a huge chunk of absences for a 13-week commitment. It's just about a quarter of the total performances.

Glad to see that grosses will pick a bit before the second week of September! Nice to make a bit of cash after taking so much of a loss!

Producers are supposedly thinking of replacing Billy outright with a former Emcee.

I’d be surprised if cogs weren’t turning as soon as he made that TV appearance in that wig.

A black, gay man wore a wig on TV and you think they were thinking about replacing him because of that but you expect us to believe you’re not a racist.

Paying someone for an Emergency fill in for a show that's closing at a massive loss in just over a month makes absolutely no sense and guarantee isn't happening. You have two very well liked understudies who could absolutely fill the gap and cost less.

YOU think I think they’re thinking about replacing him because of just the wig, and *I’M* the racist?

He did much more than just wear a wig, but the wig was a major point of discussion afterward. As you’ll see, I mention the appearance before the wig. The appearance where he made cringe remarks and a cringe clip of one of his songs was played.

But keep associating wigs with racism, by all means.

Maybe they’d cost less, but who could bring in more?

No they're not. Go away. If needed at this point, the two understudies could simply rotate the last two months. Plus Porter's contract would need to be bought out.

I’m sure the union and their agents would have an issue with that. Plus, if swings are perpetually used onstage that’s more money they’re spending per performance on them.

If Billy can be shown as having abandoned his contract, no buying out would be necessary.

If Porter cannot perform the job as hired, it would be cause for dismissal- no buyout required.

However, all that is known publicly is that he is "ill" - which could be anything from a PR euphemism to a hospitalization.

Or what could happen is they bump up Marty as Emcee and go with David as the lone understudy to finish the run. I'm sure one of the other male swings could also cover the role(Karl?).

Hopefully these producers have seen over the past few years what happens when you go “less” as opposed to “more” for understudies.

They'd have to bump someone up (or hire someone). I know there's is a limit to how long swings/understudies can continuously cover a role. (I thought it was no more than 2 weeks, but then some sort of agreement/change to contract had to happen. I certainly can be incorrect.)
