I was asked to do a season subscriber quiz about upcoming musicals and this came up on the list… does anyone have more info about this?
This has been rumored in recent weeks, should be an interesting one.
Sounds hellish.
Oooh this could really be something incredible - Carly often has the kind of pop sensibilities that seem naturally connected to the Tin Pan Alley tradition...the production can be modern but the bones underneath are ditty after ditty.
catchy little stories that live in the flirty, will-we-won't-we stage of love...perfect for a rom-com.
I wouldn't be surprised if we're getting retooled trunk songs from her other albums—the girl is insanely prolific, she writes like 200 songs per album, but that also means writing a whole new score is well within her wheelhouse.
Listen to the lyrics of "Your Type" or "Fever" and tell me those songs wouldn't belong in a musical
Listen to "Happy Not Knowing" and tell me you don't hear a little bit of Irving Berlin or Frank Loesser
Listen to "Beach House" -- that's a modern Porter classic right there

They did a reading late last year.
Jepsen potentially could be a great fit for the material.
Personally though, I wish Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo was given at shot at the assignment. They were really the sound of the original movie.

Come on now...Letters to Cleo?

The Letters to Cleo songs in the film were both covers. Like Shrek, I suspect the producers will want a curtain call number with the pop punk version of “I Want You To Want Me.”

I like Carly and obviously we have no real info but...it's always curious to me when musicians who in their own work primarily write with others are suddenly doing a musical seemingly alone. Happy Not Knowing is in fact a fun song, but it's a fun song with five writers. How is that translating to writing for the stage?
I had no idea she was a song writer and I also had no idea that she was still around.
Guessing google is now my friend.

10 Things I Hate About You, based on the beloved 1999 Touchstone Pictures film written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, is being adapted for the stage as a new musical. The show is being developed for Broadway with a score by GRAMMY Award nominee Carly Rae Jepsen and GRAMMY Award winner Ethan Gruska, book by Emmy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Lena Dunham and award-winning playwright Jessica Huang, direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon, and music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by two-time Tony Award winner Tom Kitt.
10 Things I Hate About You, a retelling of William Shakespeare’s 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew, launched the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and showcased a breakout performance by Alison Janney. The film was a box office hit and gained cult status thanks to its keen and witty examination of teenage life in a 1990s Seattle suburb and the nuanced portrayal of sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford.
Since its release, the film has been celebrated by critics and fans and was included in EW’s list of Best High School Movies of All Time. Ledger’s iconic performance of the Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio’s classic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” in the film has become inspiration for numerous marriage proposals and viral videos. 10 Things I Hate About You is produced by Bosner by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical.

I wonder if they're going to set this in the 90's or will we get a modernized storyline revolving around social media?

I pray to the theater gods that they keep it in the '90s.
