I have a friend who is assistant to Stephen Schwartz and he told me that as of today Demi Lovato has officially been offered the role of Elphaba in the film.
I don't know about her acting but I'm pretty sure she'll be able to sing the hell out of this score.
I asked if he knew of anyone else who had been cast but he said that they are struggling to find a Glinda and that Colbert is in negotiations to play the wizard.
this is the only rumored casting for Elphaba that I think would slay it because she can belt her face off and is the perfect type for the character. Ariana while absolutely lovely and talented is definitely a Glinda, characterwise (and to be honest, put a blonde wig on her and i think she’d be pretty good in the movie). if this comes to fruition i wouldn’t be mad! much better than putting some actress who can’t sing in the role and autotuning the crap out of it
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
Would your friend tell you this if you were gonna run to publicize it? I don't think so.
My problem with those singer-actors is that if you get an actor who can't sing that much, at least you can do a bit of tweaking on the songs, but there's no special tweaking to one's acting.

I'm sorry but you do not understand this artform at all. People like you have been butchering musical movies for years because they fail to understand what this artform, acting through song, is.
What you describe is acting in spite of song. Which makes it cringe worthy, and it makes the audience wonder why they even attempt to sing at all. Acting through song is about the opposite. It is taking a note, embracing it, give it various shades and colors, paint with it, and completely living the note, which translates into the best acting there is. Acting through song. Notes are actors too.
You can't separate these 2, or try to apologize for singing. It makes no sense. There is a reason that Emma Watson in BATB and Hugh Jackman in Les Mis are so cringeworthy. They sing and apologize for it. It hurts the acting.
Therefore you need people for these roles who are storytellers through notes. Instead of in spite of notes.
I wouldn't make a big deal out of that, not every joke has to be funny to everyone. I bet if a colleague would do it to her she could laugh about it too. Max, the bodyguard said he laughed about it and aks everyone to shut up. I also think that "assault" is very overrated. In most cases it's just a case of being annoyed for a moment. (aside from the rare real rape cases of course but that is 0,01%) I'm also waiting for the sexual assault claims against the hundreds of women who I have seen throwing themselves aggressively on producers and (casting) directors over the years.
Of all the pop stars out there she is the only one I could see singing the role, so I assumed it would have been her for about 2 years now (if it is true)

I'm sorry, have you seen her act in anything? Despite your treat on the artform (which was completely uncalled for and just goes along to prove the type of person you are), she won't act in spite nor through the song because, unless she has been taking some serious acting lessons and has been through a dramatic change since she was last seen in her own show, Glee or anything she has been, she just doesn't act. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not rooting for this casting.

Oh Dave19. False equivalencies. You are so rigidly and blindly obtuse. But I think you're just a troll.

Ariana Grande doesn't sound bad for Glinda as long as she can hit the high notes. But I thought it would be better if Glinda was played by Dove Cameron Britney Snow or Lily James
And of course if it was discovered that Stephen Schwartz's assistant was leaking casting information to their friends who were then running and posting it on chat boards that assistant isn't going to have a job for very long. I don't know anyone who has worked as an assistant to high-profile names like that who didn't sign an NDA before being able to accept the job.

Precisely this. So the usual "grain of salt" would be a good way to take this.
Despite this probably not being true, I think Demi is one of the few millenial performers with not only the voice, but the vulnerability to bring Elphaba to life on the big screen. I also think her raspy voice would be very remincicent of Idina’s vocals, which might also be why Disney chose Demi to do the Pop version of Let It Go for Frozen.
I also just hope Ariana Grande isn’t anywhere need this project for two reasons. First she can’t enunciate while singing to the point that I don’t understand the words in half of her songs, and unlike a pop song, the lyrics to a musical actually matter. Second is she is a one note actress with no range only playing The ditzy girl. Even in Hairspray live, she couldn’t muster up a noticeable differentiation between Good Girl Penny, and Post-Seaweed Motown Penny. If they are going with a Popstar for Elphaba, I’d hopentheyd go with an actress for Galinda, especially since Galinda grows a lot more throughout the course of the show. I honestly think Saoirse Ronan, might make a great Galinda. She would also be a great compliment to Demi.

Saoirse Ronan can definitely act the part and she certainly looks at least the right age range for the character. Hell, she might get nominated for an Oscar for it. However, I'm not sure she can sing the part since Galinda songs are frickin' high/hard. Plus, I don't think she'll have the confidence to actually chase the part in a well-beloved musical enough to actually audition for it.
