I think that to call a performace "autistic" is quite ridiculous, and is just as bad as calling a performance "mentally retarded." And I get that you were making fun of it, but there is a huge difference between OCD and Autisim, and neither are things to mock. Anyway, I don't mean to attack you, I'm more upset at whatever critic called him that.

Posted: 2/14/08 at 7:50pmActually, to be more or less serious for a second, I don't think whoever likened Karimloo's performance of Erik to a person with autism meant it in a mean-spirited way. If I'm not mistaken (haven't really immersed myself in the "phandom" for quite some time) there have been a few discussions among serious fans about whether the Phantom (in any incarnation) might actually have some form of autism. It's not an entirely laughable idea when you consider his social ineptitude, his romantic awkwardness, his incredible artistic gift...when I first read the comment, it simply struck me as an observation that Karimloo's performance just brought those aspects of the character out a little more. That's all.

Posted: 2/15/08 at 5:26pmKarimloo himself has shaped his interpretation of the role with the idea of Erik having Autism. Read any interview he's given on the subject and I'm sure it'll come up. I also recall some more learned people debating if Monk had some sort of high-functioning form of Autism in addition to the OCD, but I'll stop there because I don't watch the show often, and quite frankly I don't care. As for the manip....ehhh.

With such instinctive knowledge of how other people's minds work, it's no stretch at all to imagine an autistic guy having the entire opera house wrapped around his pinky finger.

I'm taking Abnormal Psych, and that picture does not display autism at all. Whether or not Karimloo shapes his role with the idea of Erik having autism, I find that picture mildly offensive.

Well it seems the only thing suggesting autism (or OCD) in this picture are the utensils being lined up perfectly, so jordangirl's statement was not off-base at all.
