Anything which gets theatre on network (or cable for that matter) television is huge. I don't even care if it is the watered down version (which I personally hate). Live theatre is live theatre
Let them fight it out. Come on ABC and CBS. How about HBO doing something more daring!
One could argue that having Billy Crystal perform 700 Sundays rather than get a bunch of names to gunk up a musical for ratings *is* the more daring choice.
CBS isn't really daring, their programming is safe and geared towards older folks. HBO will never have the ratings that the big four has. Making these musicals accessible to everyone with a television is what makes it really appealing and successful.
2 Broke Girls is on CBS and that is not a show for an older crowd.
Maybe Ryan Murphy will forget about Funny Girl and direct this so he can cast Lea Michele and Darren Criss? Totally kidding. I hope.

I saw Adrian armed play Danny when he was 43. Rosie O'Donnell was 35 when she played Rizzo.

And you can get away with that on stage to an extent. That particular revival made a name for itself by trotting out people who were too old for the roles. Lucy Lawless, Brooke Shields, or Maureen McCormick, anyone?
No way you could get away with that on television/film. Especially on FOX that aims for the younger sets.

I do like the movie, but let's be honest, none of the cast looked young enough to be in high school. My mom was really surprised when I told her that Dinah Manoff was only 19 during filming. Older isn't necessarily bad. But, looking believable in a role is important for television.

Glad to see a second network picking up the idea. Now ABC needs to get into the mix and they need to push each other to deliver better productions of shows. THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE was turgid thanks to the lack of direction and a mostly unsatisfying cast. Competition like this ups the stakes, and should push the live TV musical format forward.
Yes, because Fox never has older adults play singing and dancing teenagers on any of their shows, right?
I seriously doubt they would cast anyone in their 40's. Not with the talent pool out there.

Grease is an awful musical that has been done way too much. It just shows you how unsophisticated most Americans are. I don't care if I sound like a snob or not. MOST America's are stupid.

Holy crap. You really need to look at the ratings war from last year and understand that CBS killed it in the 18-49 demo. If that's "older folks," I don't want to know how you classify people over 50.

That doesn't make what you quoted inaccurate. CBS, historically, has the oldest average viewership and CBS has most of the oldest skewing programing on its network. It's just happened to also appeal to some people in the 18-49 demographic.
