Yes we saw some pictures of all the kids a while ago..and it was so great to see Gabby there.
I was somewhat surprised. Out of all the Newtildas, I kind of felt that Matilda was such a great opportunity for Gabby, but her mom and the family were ready to get back to their home and see friends, get back into her new middle school routine... "get to see what chair Gabby would have in the school orchestra", as if she is not talented enough, she plays violin quite well also.
I guess they missed this all more than they thought they would...
Check out this video with some of the creative team and some performances from the cast. They sounds great. I believe Judy Kuhn is the only one not there.
I know that this conversation is super old but I just saw it for the first time and I felt like I should reply to this message about Gabby. She and her family are not the kind of people that boast about anything. They are simply a humble family. To be honest, they are the sweetest and most kind family I have ever known. Why should they have been sad about Matilda being over and going home when they could choose to see the positive in it instead? Just because she was excited to see what would happen at school didn't mean that she was ready to go home.
I saw Lauren last night! All in all, her performance was very similar to Emily's. Her gestures and vocal inflections were practically identical.
Changing My Major was the one moment where she really made it her own, and she soared. She has a really powerful voice, and I loved seeing a fresh take on that number.
Now knowing it was her first performance, I can see why she started off playing the role just like Emily. Perhaps that was even the director's choice, but I hope she'll eventually find a completely unique characterization for herself. Changing My Major showed she had it in her.

I think you were responding to my comment? I am not exactly sure what you are saying.
I agree the family is a lovely family and I said what I did based on a conversation I had with Natalie, Gabby's mom when Matilda was ending for her. She said they were sad the experience was over but they were both ready to go home for a while. Gabby was downright excited to see her friends, be at home for a while.. and start middle school. That didn't mean that she would never want to come back down again to do something else - but they happy to go home and not commute for a while.
As far as I know, they weren't raging to come back at this time either...they just decided to do a few auditions and she got Fun Home right away and it was too good an opportunity to turn down.
I am itching to see her in the show sometime this summer...
"A friend of mine is at the show right now so I will have to ask her how she was!"
She was fantastic! This was my second time, so I have seen Sydney perform it before. Their performances were very similar. Sydney maybe was a little bigger in moments (I noticed it in "Come to the Fun Home" but that is also coming from someone who is a trained stage manager and has learned to spot even the minute differences in performances). That is easily attributed to the fact it was her first time on in front of an audience and is not quite settled into the role yet. Usually audiences are a little disappointed when an understudy is announced (she was announced - no slip - which means she found out fairly late), but I was not the only one cheering at the announcement.
At the curtain call, she got a cast hug and a huge cheer from the audience, especially from those who understood that tonight was her first performance as Small Allison.
Apparently Gabby replaced Sydney midway through the performance today (and I think has been on most of the past week). Word is she's phenomenal, but I hope Sydney gets better soon!
