I saw the 2017 revival and the current revival and the current sounds more impressive than the 2017 even though the orchestra is much smaller. It was the sound design and all the extra speakers.

Has anyone been able to find the physical CD for Gypsy on sale on Amazon? I see the digital album. Does anyone have the link for purchasing the physical album on Amazon's site?

There's only the listing for the digital copy now. The label's store says the physical release is this Friday: https://store.rhino.com/en/rhino-store/artists/gypsy/gypsy-starring-audra-mcdonald-2024-broadway-cast-recording-cd/732388396603.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqJDKeOk1yRRm1wiYR3z-d2GotS-1yo_wUeLuOFgdxRTAG1aj6T
The cultural impact of the sunset boulevard revival that its sound design is being discussed in a Gypsy thread. Arthur Laurents would be rolling in his grave. Sondheim would definitely be laughing at the situation given he kind of treats it like a step child.

Cultural impact? Hmm.
Around here, it isn't particularly unusual that some aspect of one show gets compared to and discussed in the thread for another show.

They said what they said. Aside from the star’s attendance and recent closing announcement, Gypsy has not been the name on many lips since the Tony shutout. SB on the other hand…

In any case, glad I get to revisit the show tonight

Anyone have a front/center orchestra ticket available for Audra’s closing? I’ve seen it three times and feel the need to see it one last time — without question, one of the finest performances I’ve seen on a New York stage.

GAYLE AND AUDRA: BEING BLACK ON BROADWAY
Anyone see Audra yesterday? How did she sound? It appears she has a cold and she was lamenting it is affecting the range of notes she needs to sing but that she will go on away.

Saw her tonight! She was in excellent voice. Terrific acting and terrific vocals. I cried harder than ever haha
Oh my god, I forgot the closing was today!! It will be an amazing afternoon I'm sure.
I’ll be there today! Will report back.
Did they incorporate the whole New Orleans thing for the final performance?
I’m a huge, disgusting ogre who flew all the way from Houston for this and Audra owes me an autograph. Does anyone know where the after party is tonight?

Ha ha. Too much.
Believe ogres!
It was sublime in every single way except the guy sitting next to me who from time to time took out his phone to take photographs mid show. What a send out!
Doesn’t seem like there were any post-show speeches today.
Show’s socials just posted the final bows, George C. Wolfe and the standbys and understudies came on (including the Chowsie cover).
Caught the show this afternoon and the energy in the audience and cast was noticeable. Bouts of applause spontaneously throughout the overture, multiple standing ovations mid-show (most noticeable after Audra’s initial entrance and following Rose’s Turn, although a few other moments received partial ovations), and the cast was in all in great voice.
Nothing of note regarding it being the final performance aside from the energy between audience and stage. The curtain call included the standbys/swings as mentioned, but no other speeches.
Random: During the strip, as Joy Woods asks the audience “do you know what that means?” someone shouted out “A stripper!”, which received some playful applause and a “Hold on!” from Joy Woods. This isn’t in the script, correct? My husband and I were at odds on that. Any other performance it would have probably felt more disruptive, but it was part of the mood. Nothing like live theatre.

I can imagine why there would not have been any speeches. So much was expected up front and so little was delivered. I cannot imagine that George C Wolfe -- normally a great director -- would have wanted to be on stage waxing rhapsodic about all the great things that resulted from the show. This revival will be dismissed more and more over time. It was just a really bad version of a great show.

Audra was amazing. I saw it three times and she deserved that Tony.

It doesn’t bother me that Jarethan and many others didn’t care for this Gypsy revival. I know it’s not for everyone, and I had my own criticisms too. My bias, perhaps, is that I had never seen a live version of the musical before - so I didn’t have a bunch of comparisons. Maybe I would feel differently if I did.
But for me, sitting in the front orchestra, I was struck by Audra McDonald’s performance as Rose. It was fearless, flirtatious, and ferocious. I didn’t know where she could go after ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses,’ and then she managed to go further with ‘Rose’s Turn.’ I was engaged from start to finish. It’s certainly a performance, and therefore a revival, I will remember.
