I don't particularly care for the set design.

Looking at it with more effort now, I actually do like the concept slightly more.
Regarding the orchestra, I don't think the Atkinson has a pit (besides Times A Changin, with the band on stage, what was the last musical it housed)?
The one with the moon is obviously a newly written Prologue - (the Love is a Many Splendored Thing scene in the film). The lockers are for "Grease is the Word" (that great Barry Gibb, Frankie Valli collaboration for the film) - Marshall's concept is to have the people jump out of the lockers.
The cafeteria/front of school is the "Summer Nights" scene, the football field is the "Hit 'Em Again, Rydell Ringtails" cheer sequence, the one after that could easily be the dance contest sequence or "Those Magic Changes." The next 2 are the fold-out bedroom for "Freddy My Love" (and Sandra Dee, if they've reorganized the show to be like the movie).
The 2 Burger Palace sets are obvious (I'm assuming the one with the picnic table is for "Sandra Dee" and "We Go Together", the drive-in is for "Sandy (Stranded at the Drive-In), the living room set is for "Rock-n-Roll Party Queen" and "Worse Things I Could Do," and the last box, the one with all the graffiti is for "One That I Want" and the finale (you can tell by the DZ + SD graffiti in a heart, as well as Rizzo + Kenickie).
However, my particularly favorite touch of the set? In the last box, with all the graffiti, towards the bottom corner on the left, it says "Pink handj--," before being obstructed by a figure. I know it's supposed to say 'handjive,' but what I'm thinking of is so much funnier.
I the logo and hate the show,,,, but those sets are incredible.
I love what looks like the Pink Ladies entrance through the lockers.
I echo what Carl said.
Almost worth seeing for the sets alone.

Very clever. They're not pizzazzy, but they shouldn't be. They're great. Simplistic, cheezy, and fun.
the sets are incredible but i hate what this and the 94 revival have done to this show. i guess i've just outgrown grease.
Looks really fun. Between these and Ms. Marshall alone, I think this will be a great show.
To everyone that is complaining about how flat and static it looks, and lacking in pizzaz...you have to realize this is a tiny scale model! Of COURSE it is going to lack a certain sense of life and pizzaz. Lights and people are what bring it to life.
I am a really big fan of his approach here. The only set I don't really like is the "Summer Nights" split screen thing...Something about it doesn't fit in with the approach of the rest of the show, and it is a bit too boring for me.

Akiva - I agree (re: Summer Nights) and have always thought that the "scene is written way too much like a film (with a split-screen going back and forth). There is no real way to 100% successfully convey the front of the school and traditional, indoor cafeteria on stage, IMO.
I thought I read that they weren't using "Grease Is the Word." But from the set design, it doesn't look like they're using the original beginning of the show. I personally like the original beginning a lot. The '94 revival didn't even use it.
The sets look interesting. I don't know, I'm going to have to see it when it's built. I am not too crazy about the "Summer Nights" image. Just take out that cafeteria drop and it would be better.

Yeah, that's the problem. Unless they want Jacobs to rewrite the show (which I'm sure he'd be reluctent to do without Casey being around), they can't cut the cafeteria. Logistically, they'd have to change the whole scene to have the Burger Palace Boys and Pink Ladies separate.
Can't they just have the front stoop of the school for the boys and an outside eating area for the girls a few feet and maybe slightly downstage?

The set designs seem oddly reminiscent of the set for "13" in LA. But at least, I think we can all agree they're a vast improvement on untold high school and regional productions of Grease we've seen...
Tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky. Some of it looks interesting (the bedroom) but it looks so...flat.
What's the house seen for?
Does anyone have any pictures of the original Broadway show's set?
hey. i have family friends and family who work for the broadway theatre. One of my family friends tonight we were talking about the bway shows.....Grease is sold out for months. Sorry for that info. I heard it is a llong show but fun.
This collage is of the original Broadway cast of GREASE (1972):
Barry Bostwick, Carole Demas, Adrienne Barbeau, Walter Bobbie, etc.
I love what I see of the original Broadway sets. I'm not too sure how I feel about these sets...
Was the original production of Grease inspiration for Spring Awakening? I mean, the microphones and stuff, haha.
Akiva, that's what I was thinking about how to solve it.

Boy, Marty went all out with these costumes.
I don't think I've seen anything more drab. Perhaps they'll look better on stage.
those costume plates are GORGEOUS!!!!
