Jonathan Cohen said: "It's interesting to learn the subtext is clearer in the new version, but why isn't it just the text? Broadway isn't a Florida public school... you can say gay."
I'm going to channel Jay here a bit, but isn't this potentially attributable to J.K. Rowling's (at best) questionable record on LGBT issues? We all know about her disgusting opinions about transwomen. In addition, despite trying to retcon Dumbledore's sexuality with a tweet, she created zero LGBT characters in about a million words of prose in the original book series (while Philip Pullman had at least one same-gender pairing in his contemporaneous book series). I can see her hand in the desire to keep Albus and Scorpius' romance in the realm of subtext.
