WTF!! She doesn't die?! Is the Lament still in the film? That's the witche's breaking point! She loses her daughter! WTf! Its not just okay if the Rapunzel just leaves with the prince. R you shi**in me with this? This is a joke right?
And they can cut the reprise to Agony without cutting the princes' wandering eyes. They can still flirt with Snow White and Sleeping Beauty for a moment without having to sing a whole song about.
Again, it slows down the action. It's not new information either. Cinderella's Prince has already had a tryst with the Baker's Wife.
I love it in the stage show, but the second act really is too long for a movie. It would get ponderous if they did the whole thing. So far, I think they're trimming the right things to tighten it up .. as long as those moments aren't tossed away, they can be truncated into brief bits instead of full songs.

broadway guy, seriously, it has been addressed earlier. Feel free to read others' comments on it on the earlier pages. And the whole "I don't read the threads. I just post when I can" is a horrid way to be a part of a thread at all.
Is the Lament still in the Film? UGHH im so mad! How can they have Rapunzel Not die? It completely screws up the Witch in Act 2! She has nothing to live for anymore now that her daughter is dead! That is why she leaves them alone and vanishes during "Last midnight"! What the helll is the witch going to do for the 2nd half of the film? Is last Midnight in the film?? You are totally screwing with the character of the witch by not having Rapunzel die. It destroys the witch that repunzel is dead. ALL her pain and envy in act 2 is because of Rapunzel's death!!! Without having her die you don't see why the witch is THE WITCH!
Why can't you just tell me? I shouldn't be bashed just cause i didn't read all 30 pages of this thread. God Forbid I have a life. Or if you could direct me to which page this is discussed that is fine also.
On topic, I always prefer a Little Red that's just a bit more knowing than an 11 or 12 year old can be. It's a song about sexual awakening...and I just get skeeved when a pre-pubescent girl takes it on.
Holy crap they are cutting the Lament! UGH i knew disney wouldn't have the balls to do it. Looks like my theory was right! Not killing off Rapunzel is a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR plot change. By not killing her off the witch becomes boring and you don't see her break! Losing someone cause they went off with the prince is NOT the same as seeing your daughter killed.
Broadwayguy, there's a great DVD of the Broadway show in its entirety, why don't you just watch that and skip the movie and this thread while you're at it? I don't get the outrage over these cuts. If BWW had been around when Fosse was working on his masterpiece CABARET, your head might have exploded.
Re the cuts, I agree "No More" would stop the film cold. Marshall was very smart to cut "Class" (another late second act song) from CHICAGO, the entire courtroom sequence in that film is so swiftly and neatly done, he really knows about pacing. I am sad "Maybe They're Really Magic" is gone, it's oddly one of my favorite songs (or aside might be a better word) from the show, but again, it's something that can easily turn into dialogue.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I just can't believe they would do something like that! I am outraged that they would completely take out a whole LEVEL of the witch's character and completely take out the most heart breaking Number in the show! What the hell is the witch going to do for the second half of the film? The only reason she is with the baker and cindy and red and jack is because she was looking for Rapunzel! If Rapunzel is off in a tower somewhere than why would the witch be in that mess? Why would she care what happens to them if she knows her daughter is safe. The witch singing "last midnight" will now take a complete gravity off the song ( if she is still singing it) cause now she isn't vanishing cause she has nothing to live for! She has no reason to be in the woods if she knows where her daughter is! Insane! You are completely taking out an emotional level by letting rapunzel live! Now the song "Children will listen" will have a lot less of a meaning pertaining to the witch! I am sorrry but letting Rapunzel live is completely sugar coating this film to fit disney's style. I dont want some sugar coated fairytale crap i want INTO THE WOODS.
I completely agree with what these posters said also, They are absolutely correct:
"I tend to think it will lessen the impact of the Witch and what she risked. She traded everything for her beauty, and seemingly some of that motivation was to win Rapunzel's favor again ... and then Rapunzel dies. Take away that death, and it will soften their story, no question.I'm really going to miss the "Children Won't Listen"/"Children Will Listen" dichotomy."
That was very powerful."
"Cutting Rapunzel's death completely changes the Witch's character arc. It's the major catalyst for her breakdown (Last Midnight). And what reason does she now have for singing Children Will Listen? Or maybe they've cut that as well? We all know how much Rob Marshal just loooves cutting scores to an inch of their lives. Also, with no Rapunzel dying, there's no Lament. So what will she get to sing now? Just this new song, by the looks of things."

I am aware of the DVD version of the broadway show and i love that version but i want to see this musical on film. I think it Has the potential to be a great dark film and im not saying it still won't be, i am just saying you are taking out a HUGE emotional level to the film by letting Rapunzel live. Im very disappointed. I willl still see the film but I have gotten a lot less excited about it now from hearing this news. Oh and I wouldn't care if they change cabaret, I never cared much for that show. I actually think the film is better than the original musical.
What makes you think Rapunzel went back to the tower? Where did you get that idea? It's not anywhere.
She got married to a prince, bore, twins, and they decide to leave forever. They're "out of the woods."
Gone.
Not back in the tower.
The Witch loses her. The Witch went through all of that "Act One stuff," gave up all her magic, and got her looks back for nothing. Her "daughter" left anyway.
