Posted: 11/10/06 at 6:00pmHairspray is fun, pure enjoyment - easy to follow. WICKED - it has its fun moments, but also serious ones as well. You've got to pay attention when watching WICKED to know how the whole story unfolds How the Cowardly Lion got its name, the history of the Tin Man... ect. To this day, I don't think Gregory Maguire is getting all the credit he deserves... To write a novel about things that "happened" before the Frank L. Baum book THE WIZARD OF OZ which is over 100 years old, is quite incredible. I hope Mr. Maguire is getting more pay over Stephen Schwartz with his work on WICKED. I believe He is the mastermind of WICKED not Stephen Schwartz and his "Defying Gravity". So I may have to say HAIRSPRAY over WICKED but both are great shows... enjoyed by all ages.

I like Hairspray a lot more but honesly I don't think that you can compare them justly. Hairspray only aims to entertain and be enjoyable. Wicked aims to do this but also tries to have meaningful messages about morals and political commentary and make a point. It tries to do way too much and is spread too thin. And then it adds on the happy Broadway ending, which I think completely contradicts everything the playwrights are trying to say with the show.
Hairspray wins.
Why are we comparing the two again?

Posted: 11/10/06 at 8:23pmNo question...Hairspray is superior. Both are a bit shallow, but Hairspray makes it work and entertaining while Wicked's attempts at depth are just laughable. Wicked's score is also much much inferior to that of Hairspray's.

Posted: 11/10/06 at 8:37pmI love WICKED greatly, but I love HAIRSPRAY too. I think that WICKED's wow factor is amazing, and i love the music & story, too. HAIRSPRAY, though, has a more realistic story.

Posted: 11/10/06 at 9:56pmI actually think both shows are mediocre, but Wicked is the better - because Wicked still functions as it should without its original cast - I think, like The Producers, Hairspray loses a lot of punch without Harvey and co.

Posted: 11/10/06 at 11:26pmI think both shows are mediocre (maybe mediocre is generous for Hairspray...). Somehow I knew opening the thread that there would be more votes for Hairspray because Wicked has somehow come to be known as fluff and one of the worst musicals on this board. While Hairspray may have finer craft and form, Wicked, I think reaches towards something much deeper and more profound than Hairspray, even though it never truly reaches it or fully explores it. And I appreciate the attempt, whether or not they work well. And it has a better story.

I saw Wicked once. It is a great show but I have seen Hairspray 4 times.
Hairspray is one of my favorite shows.
My two cents.
Hairspray.
PS SS is a genius and I like Pippin more than Hairspray.

Hairspray is an excellent work of satire with a snappy score and wonderfully witty lyrics. Wicked is a gimmick with one good song and one song that ends in a Tarzan yell. I will go to my grave trying to figure out why that yell is there. It defies explaination.

Posted: 11/11/06 at 11:40amI love Wicked, but I just leave so much happier and more excited after seeing Hairspray than Wicked. I love both of them, but there's just something about Hairspray that touches me more than Wicked does I guess.

Posted: 11/11/06 at 1:42pmBoth are enjoyable shows that take you out of yourself for 2 and a half hours. I think that Wicked has more "wow numbers" and that the music varries a little more than that of Hairspray, but Hairspray's music is just FUN. Both are good when you need to get away.

Posted: 11/11/06 at 7:02pmHairspray has a book that actually follows its source material very closely. It's well strutured and quite funny. It's is catchy, upbeat and thankfully powerballadless. (Okay, you could count the 11'oclocker as one, but it's a helluva lot better than The Wizard and I.) It's a much smarter show.

Posted: 11/11/06 at 7:58pmwhen you think about it, WICKED and HAIRSPRAY are equally excellent since both of them teach a lesson...and they are actually similar by both teaching that appearances don't mean everything.
