This has pretty much been said already--but just wanted to say it, too:
JLY is definitely the Tony frontrunner--his performance truly blows the audience away! I don't think I've ever seen an audience react this way to any other other production I've seen.
As far as which one's better--his singing or his acting? It's hard to say. His singing is beyond belief--25-30 incredibly demanding songs (from standards to the amazing falsetto on massive songs). His acting? What impresses me the most (it's already been said)--that he goes from a 16 year old, rather naive kid with a dream to be a singer to a 55-60 year old star who seemed to go through hell & back. JLY makes the Frankie Valli story "his own."
There is a curious paradox that no one can explain;
Who understands the secret of the reaping of the grain,
Who understands why spring is born out of winter's laboring pain,
Or why we all must die a bit before we grow again.

cpd-yes, he was out for both performances today. he wasn't feeling well. but he will be in the show tomorrow in case anyone was going and was wondering.

"Umm..did you guys see Pajama Game? It's gonna be between Cerveris and Young, but I think Young will pull it out because he's such a newcomer. I mean, it wasn't that long ago that he was ushering for Chitty, while Cerveris has been on Broadway forever, it seems."
I'm pretty sure he said he was an usher for 42nd Street. As much as I liked JLY, I haven't seen Sweeney (yet), so can't call it, but I did really enjoy his performance in JB alot.
Arghh! Grammar pet peeve #1: your vs you're. "Your" is a possessive pronoun. "You're" is the contraction of "you are."
<<
How did you find her? Did she have a blog that said something like "I am Tony frontrunner John Lloyd Young's girlfriend, here's how to contact me!"?
Made me laugh out loud.
John Lloyd had a stomach virus, I think, and Dominic went on for him both shows on Saturday. He was in on Sunday - I saw it, and he was fantastic, as he has been in the role. The BC/EFA speeches are hilarious.
The race is close this year, but I have a feeling JLY will come out on top. I'm rooting for him.
Yeah, him and 70+ others. Don't get excited about the Drama League Awards -- they're completely meaningless. It's just an excuse for the folks to give it out to rub shoulders with celebrities which is why even Julia Roberts got a nod. They nominate EVERYBODY in hopes that they'll all show up to their little luncheon.
Wait and get excited when Young gets his Drama Desk and Tonys nods.

i think frankly all the jersey boys deserve nominations, but they can't all have them. Jersey boys is much more than a jukebox show, becuase it is about the actual band not a string of events with four seasons songs just placed in. I hope JLY takes it!
Figured this would be a good thread to bump for what I have to say.
So I saw Jersey Boys once before, but John was out and Dominic Nolfi was on...who I mean, wasn't bad or anything...
But from all I've been hearing about JLY, I was very anxious to see him, and finally did so tonight.
He seemed to be having a teeny teeny bit of understandable vocal problems, as just the highest notes sounded a bit raspy. But everything else he sang amazingly, I mean even those notes were great.
But from everything I was expecting...he is a great singer, there's no denying that...but I was more impressed by his acting than singing!
He had the character down from the start, and you believed he was aging without any physical changes...he just kept changing his voice, so...I almost didn't notice he wasn't physically changing if that makes sense...the sound of the voice was enough to convince me that the character had aged.
The major dramatic moments though...you know some...he was pretty heartbreaking in. I teared up a bit. Little moments too he was very moved, and he lashed out great. Just...wow.
Cerveris gives a fantastic performance, no doubt, but considering how great JLY's singing is, and the fact that IMO his acting surpasses his singing...I think he deserves the Tony.
Ooh, and I did like the show better this time. There was understandably much more chemistry, and all the other actors are wonderful, like last time.
I still am in the minority who thinks TCP was the best (sometimes I wonder if I saw a different show than most people...), but tonight I decided JB deserves the Tony over DC.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
Cerveris is a TONY voter Fav and they Hate Juke musicals JLY actually has a good chance The race is on! Harry's chest is gaining and Bob M is still in his chair just enjoying the Show
I don't know if he is the front runner....I would say Cerveris has a very good chance...but call be biased, I LOVED Sweeny Todd! :) Joh Lloyd Young is also FANTASTIC and such an adorable guy to watch on stage...it's going to be interesting.
