I know nothing about how well Tootsie is really doing (and seems like no one else here does, either) but this logic is flawed, no? 55% for Tootsie means more cash in the door, but renting the Marquis has got to be more expensive than renting the Lyceum- size plays a role there. So sure, Tootsie brought more in because its in a huge theater, but that also hurts its bottom line.

I don't know either, so my question is serious, not snarky: don't theaters receive a percentage of the gross rather than a flat fee? If so, it may not cost more to have the same number of paying customers at a large house than at a smaller one.
But if houses are NOT paid a percentage of the gross, why do their contracts specify that they can evict shows that fall below a certain gross. If the house is rented out at a flat fee, what does it matter to the landlord what the show grosses?

I've read through this thread and am somewhat upset by it. A friend of mine is in TOOTSIE and he has a wife and two children to support. I would hope that the show has a nice, healthy run despite the odds.

This is the worst sort of manipulative response. Also, if your friend has any talent whatsoever--and I'm sure he has--he will work again. All shows close, and most people don't remain perpetually even in a show with a long run.

It's interesting to read this thread, as the numbers don't sound great but it sounds like it's in the limbo position where weeknights are bad weekends good and holiday nights very bad. Doesn't anyone hear any good buzz about this show? Anyone adoring the cast recording, begging for tickets, naming a performances as "must see" of the season? The show seems to embody mediocrity, so the question of whether it's doing well or poorly seems to be evaluated on a glass half-full/half empty metric.

Calling this response manipulative is harsh and unnecessary. Just because a person's talents will allow them to "work again" doesn't guarantee they will find work immediately or comfortably, especially when they have family members to support.

I think mainly when there are heartfelt shows like the Prom where peoples responses to it are passionate, you have an artistic hit like Hadestown, box office juggernaut Ain't Too Proud, and a very strong place landscape, its hard to recommend Tootsie over any of the others. Even though I enjoyed Tootsie immensely.

Thinking about this on my train this morning (I know, lame) I really would worry this is going to close before or right after the new year. Moulin Rouge is a new hit musical, I think JLP could do well since its a familiar show that seems to be good, Tina Turner musical, idk, I think unless they get a star to replace Santino I just can't see it. Too much competition. Oddly enough with so many shows closing Id think it'd last longer but I think that helps its fall prospects and not really their future ones. Idk, just me. Will be really interesting to see how this ends up playing out.

Mike, I have been watching Ticketmaster. Take a look at both Saturday performances to see how many seats are available. It's a lot of seats for TDF and tkts.

Broadway Surveys sent a survey about Tootsie art work today. I wonder if the show is re-branding.

Rebranding would be really smart for the fall to see if they can get more of an advance. Is there anyone who would be consider a "stunt cast"? The role of Michael Dorothy did win a tony so I don't think its too out of the realm of possibility.

How about Faye Dunaway starring as Dorothy Michaels -- an actress who NO ONE WILL HIRE, so she becomes Michael Dorsey and a new star is born!!

I think "Stunt Casting" (i.e casting a comedian or sitcom star as Michael/Dorothy) is definitely plausible, and I can see Tootsie doing this if the international transfers went ahead. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels did the same thing in the West End when it cast sitcom star Robert Lindsey (He has plenty of theatrical experience, but is best known for the sitcom My Family) and the comedian Rufus Hound in the lead roles. Given Tootsie's old-fashioned sitcom sensibilities, casting a sitcom star would make more sense than casting the alcoholic cynical bartender from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend...

I’m gonna say that The producers are gonna wait to see if there’s a bit of a spike in the two weeks following the closures of the other shows in August and possibly announce a closing for end of September.
