PJ, that was hilarious.
Now they have an opportunity to get someone great opposite Harvey, who has turned out to be giving quite an amazing performance, apparently.
And is this like when Christian Hoff "broke his foot" in Pal Joey...?
I think Charles Shaughnessy (The Nanny's Mr, Sheffield) needs to be back on Broadway. He'd be an amazing Georges!

Is Fierstein that good? Yes, he's an amazing actor, but his singing voice is, well, horrible.
I saw Harvey tonight with Chris Hoch as Georges and he was really wonderful. I've seen him in a few things, and usually for the first few minutes the voice is grating but after my ear gets used to it it's not so bad. He's a wonderful actor...I remember being pleasantly surprised by how tender and warm his "Chavaleh" was when I saw him in Fiddler...the same thing happened here. His "I Am What I Am" was wonderful and while his voice isn't pleasant I've never found it painful to sit through him in a show because he's a great actor.
I think the idea of Victor Garber as Georges is brilliant, he'd be perfect.
I wonder how much money they're throwing at Kelsey to come back.
Throwing money at him?
They're throwing a WEDDING for him!
I too vote for Victor Garber. I would weep buckets to see Harvey and Victor sing "Song on the Sand."
I agree about Charles Shaughnessy. He would be fab!
How great would it be to see Charles and Daniel Davis together in the show.
"Recent hip surgery"?
Maybe he slipped and tripped into a hip-bath.
It escapes me right now, but who said:
"Only someone with less taste than a British director would mix Herman with Sondheim."

If Brian Stokes Mitchell or Gabriel Byrne were to play Georges I'd run, not walk, to the Longacre.
What's Geoffrey Rush doing after he's through with Madman?

His name is gone from the cast list on the website now. It's funny because the backgrounds with his name and picture on them are still front and center.
Wow. I saw this last Saturday night (2/19/11). I guess I will have been one of the few people who saw Jeffrey Tambor play this role! I did prefer Kelsey Grammer's performance to his. I didn't detect any of the issues that Reidel stated in his article, though (lack of confidence, etc.). This news seemed to come out of nowhere. I am really stunned by this.
Didn't Daniel Davis also drop out of the show during the 2005 revival and that's why Robert Goulet stepped in? Is the role of Georges "cursed"??
This may sound a little silly due to the whole "Frasier" connection but what about David Hyde Pierce? They could put a rug on him too.
Okay...here is a suggestion out of nowhere..
How about David Ogden Stiers? (Charles Emerson Winchester..blah blah blah...from MASH)? He's a musician...conductor...I think he'd be a charming George.
Daniel Davis didn't drop out. He was fired because he was reportedly mean to everyone, including Gary Beach. He created such a poisonous atmosphere that after a show one day the producers came to his dressing room and told him he had just had his last show.
Daniel Davis was fired because he and Gary Beach were not getting along. Unfortunately, they fired the wrong person. Daniel was giving the best performance of Georges I have ever seen and Gary Beach was doing Roger Debris with Nathan Lane thrown in for seasoning. Consequently, he was horrendous.
It would be so ironic to have Mr. Davis take over ... However he is doing brilliant work right now in the play "Black Tie" and is not available ... not that he would be asked or take it.
"I'm sure if he was still struggling with the hip thing that he would have noticed in rehearsals..."
Exactly. I'm not buying the hip surgery excuse, because:
1. If it had been recent (within the last 6 months) no doctor in their right mind would have advised Tambor to take on the role (let alone a producer unless they didn't know about it. Too many insurance risks.)
2. If it was within the last year, he'd be completely recovered and perfectly mobile, unless it was a botched operation (in which case it most likely would have been discovered long before he'd signed any contracts.)
And FYI: I had a hip replaced in December, and while it's not a walk in the park (no pun intended), it hasn't been that big a deal either. Yes, there are certain precautions that must be taken for the first 6 weeks after the operation and I'm still in physical therapy, but I was up and walking the day of the surgery, out of the hospital in 3 days and I'm pretty much back to full mobility.
I'd suggest Roger Rees if he wasn't replacing Nathan Lane already.
Im a huge David Ogden Stiers fan! If he wasn't mega old, he'd be fantastic!
Victor Garber, please!
Though the idea of Roger Rees rotating between Gomez in The Addams Family and Georges in La Cage has a lot of appeal. If John Cullum could appear in two shows at once, Rees should try!
Roger Allam- who played Albin in London- would match very well with Harvey and make a sophisticated and fun Georges.
Throwing in my vote for Victor Garber as well. Let's see a role that reflects the Victor offstage!
Dang, Almira! I guess you've been bi-i-i-i-ding your time, my pretty, just bi-i-i-i-ding your time.
Congrats. Ya got me.
Davis got into trouble with Actor's Equity during La Cage if I remember correctly. Problems with Beach aside. there were reports of him screaming at ushers and tech people. Riedel reported on it at the time.
