I feel bad for her, as well. It's such a powerful moment, and for it being her first time, it must be disappointing. I hope she recovered well in Act II.
Sorry to harp on this, but I must. The lighting is so very important in that number. All of the spots, smoke, etc., are focused on her...up there. So, was the lighting affected terribly? Also, what were the reactions of the ensemble? Obviously, they could not point at her "up there" or act like they were being thrust to the ground. Just wondering. Thanks for the info thus far.
It made the scene very weird to be honest. Mainly becuase the stage is rather crowded at that point. So it was like they were trying to capture Elphaba, but couldnt even though she was like 5-10 feet away. the lighting effects still worked pretty well... however I could barely tell her huge cape was there.
I can't believe that actually happened to someone. When Eden was at Chatterbox she talked about the whole flying thing (or the worst-case scenario, complete lack thereof) and she said there is some sort of safety switch that you have to hit with the small of your back and that if you don't, you don't fly.
Seth, as well as everybody there, was kind of in shock and was like, "That's crazy, so if you miss this little safety WITH THE SMALL OF YOUR BACK...???!??" And Eden was just kind of like, "...exactly."
She went on about how she was PETRIFIED going on her first time that she wouldn't hit it and that she'd be the first Elphaba to NOT fly. Seth asked her what the backup plan was if Elphaba ever didn't fly and she said they told her to just "walk downstage." Cut to more "??!?!!??!" from us and from Seth and another "...exactly," from Eden.
That REALLY sucks. How were the riffs?
Andrew, tonight isn't about you! It isn't even about me!!! - [FD]
Poor woman! She musta been near tears! SO fustrating! But I am sure she is gonna rehearse it til she can hit that switch upside down. I'm glad she sang well any way>
Jenna DID fly at yesterday's matinee. There is nothing to be confused about. She sat on the platform and it lifted her up just as any other Elphaba gets lifted up.
I was there. If she got lifted up it certainly wasnt more then a few feet. And when the house lights came up I could hear a bunch of people around me saying "there must of been something wrong, she is supposed to lift up" I was in the 3rd row, so it was hard to see, but my friends were in the second row of the mezz and said she didnt lift up at all...
AbsolutKnight - can you give us a more detailed review? I'm really interested to hear what she did with the songs. How was her end of Defying Gravity, minus the technical difficulties? Wizard and I? No Good Deed? Heh - you get the point. Oh and most importantly - how did she look green??
