Ok so... I've had a couple of people say that it is either weird or they didn't like it...
One person said it while listening to Wild Party...
The other person said it while listening to her rendition of Defying Gravity...
I don't hear the weirdness...I think it's fine and damn good.
and now my one friend says he doesn't like her as elphaba and I'm taking him to see Wicked in Cleveland in a month...and I'm just thinking...I can take someone else if you won't appreciate Julia Murney...
but yeah, can someone explain what's so different about it?
-Feste from "Twelfth Night"
I find that her vibrato is very fast. I don't particularly like it, but many people do.
Oh my God, it makes me weak in the knees. I have the biggest girlcrush on her.

hmmm
I guess I do hear that it is a bit quicker than most...
I don't know. I love her voice and I really enjoy her work. I guess that's all that matters.
-Feste from "Twelfth Night"
I haven't heard it yet, but am curious...
Is it slower than a Buckley, but faster than a speeding LuPone?
Part of her appeal, at least for me, is that her voice is different. Perfect? no. Listen to Maybe I Like it This Way and you will see that there is something uniquely beautiful about her voice. Watch her performance as Florence in the Chess Benefit Concert, she was magnificent (escept for her yelping at the end of nobody's side). Her flaws are what seperate her from every other "great" singer. I feel the same way about Carolee Carmello...

I completely agree GClef
I personally loved her performance in Chess...(like you said, despite the weird screaming in Nobody's Side) while everyone else thinks that because of that flaw she's terrible.
-Feste from "Twelfth Night"
Well put GClef. The appeal is in the distinction. I've listened to almost all of Julia's stuff, and she is most definitely in a very different category of vibrato. It is a very fast vibrato, though not as intense as Betty Buckley, which on some high notes when combined with the speed of the vibrato can carry as shrill. The note in "Nobody's Side" (while quite simply a poor choice) is demonstrative of this idea.
Having seen Julia in Philadelphia I didn't notice a vibrato. That was the first time I ever heard her sing, and she was absolutely wonderful.
The screech at the end of Nobody's Side isn't normal; she can sing that high without making that... noise. I'm not sure what happened.
Sherie Rene Scott also has a very distinct vibrato, though not a PHENOMINAL voice, it definetly sets her apart- in a good way.

Yeah, I don't think Sherie has that amazing of a voice, but it's very distinct, which makes it enjoyable. I love Julia's voice. I don't find anything wrong with it. She's got so much power. I still am confused how she's never been cast in a B'way show before Lennon. Where'd she got to school?
Syracuse, i believe. And they rave about her.

I like Julia's voice. It's fine for me. But I happen to think that Sherie's voice is absolutely phenomenal. Like Em said, it makes me weak in the knees.
One of the best voices on Broadway. It's interesting that people can have such different opinions like that.
The "screech" is Nobody's Side has been interpolated into the score since the original. LaPaige holds a low F# for a while whereas in this version and the Danish tour etc, Florence flips it up into a high F#. I've heard a few singers do it in different ways and Julia did it with the most balls! Although I believe Seth took the song up a tone, so that yelp is actually a G# and pretty high for any woman to be mixing up to. I dont mind it actually as the backing vocals sound fantastic in that key (as does Julia in the rest of the song)
Oh and I have seen her performance in Wicked and her voice is terrific all the way through. She makes some interesting choices and adds a few little tricks that are more impressive than the other performers and their riffs.

Yet another reason it should have been recored. C'mon Ghostlight! You let me down on that one!
I like her vibrato.
But my favorite is Chita Rivera's intense vibrato on KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN.
Costs a lot of money and was a year before Ghostlight really got into the swing of things?
Plus were there not issues relating to Benny and Bjorn? Oh and Josh Groban's record company. If the money was there I am sure they would have released it but sadly it lives on only in less "official" ways
I actually really liked that "yelp" you guys are referring to. It was a very...rock-star moment. I love Julia.
i know i would have loved a recording and i'm pissed if it's because of Josh Groban that this went unrecorded....get someone else to sing the role...i realize that might not have been the most bankable choice but still...i love julia in CHESS. Love her voice...as said above...its unique and i think its sexy as hell.
She sounds a little shrill for my tastes some of the time, but I think she's growing on me. The yelp in "Nobody's Side," though, is just not a good choice in any production. I really liked her throughout the rest of the song, but that just... hurts my ears.

She does have a very fast vibrato and I really like it. Her voice is very different from any Elphaba we've heard. She has a much healthier sound than the usual pop-screechy-and-or-screamy belt we're more accustomed to.
saw her in WICKED twice in the past week ... first time i've ever heard her ... thought she was terrific!

She did in fact go to Syracuse and I wouldn't say they rave about her... she is mentioned but I would say they rave more about Taye. Both are very accomplished alumni and any school brags about their own.

I personally love it, and... cturtle, who's picture is that?
