I was considering commenting this in the Almost Famous thread, but by the time I got there the conversation had moved on and I didn’t want to re-open that can of worms. But since it’s come up again here:
The “problem” with Jordan’s reviews aren’t with the reviews themselves, the problem is people putting them on some kind of pedestal. Every individual’s opinion is just that: 1 person’s opinion. But because Jordan is often the 1st to comment, people put an undue amount of weight on his posts. And Jordan, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m guessing you agree with me: as much as you probably appreciate the kind words you get about your 1st preview posts, I’m guessing you don’t want the burden of being treated like the be-all-end-all, “God’s word from the mountaintop" in the hours following a 1st preview.
And none of that is your fault, it’s just about people recognizing that you, like all of us, are offering a single data point.
If people find that their taste tends to align with Jordan’s, then fine, go nuts using his posts as a barometer. But if you’re just hyping up his reviews because he’s the 1st to post, consider waiting for more data before making a decision to buy tickets based on “word of mouth."
From a video I found of last night's first Broadway curtain call, the band positioning and stacked rooftops remind me of the national tour of Jagged Little Pill.
The design remains the *same*, but with a little sprucing. Embellishments for the skating rink and the school come from the fly rails. The car is now an actual car seat and not a bench, but it still comes from underneath the stage.
This was one of the loveliest nights of theatre I’ve ever had. I’m not overly familiar with the original play, but I can already tell turning it into a musical - and casting Victoria Clark, delivering another performance that is on Margaret Johnson level - has elevated it to a deeply moving work of art. I laughed and cried from beginning to end. Sometimes, and often, both at once. Just loved it.
Agreed. Holy wow is this a beautiful musical. Almost perfect. The score is very tuneful and the lyrics are just amazing. The book scenes might be a little long for a musical, but the cast is so great it doesn’t matter. The four high school kids are absolutely hilarious. Bonnie Milligan almost walks away with the show, except Victoria Clark is such a stunning revelation. No spoilers here but that entrance late in act two just knocked me out. The audience gasped. What an unforgettable moment. I can’t recall a musical in a long time with a book this strong. It sings so naturally. And a shout out to the mother and father who somehow turn the most despicable pair into characters we care about. I just loved everything about this show.
Hilarious and moving all at once with superb performances from the entire company. Victoria Clark is giving another career-defining performance and the changes since the Atlantic production are great! Already planning to return after opening.

Well said! This is a musical masterpiece, and truly great theatre. Anyone and everyone should experience it for themselves.
i loved this sweet little musical so very much - it's going to be my new recommendation when people ask me for one. i teared up many times and laughed even more; was with 5 other people who also all loved it. 2 thumbs up from me.

You guys can see Tonys on the way for this show? Best Musical? Score, Book, Actress, Featured Actress."
I can’t imagine any other new musical besting it, so I could see it taking Musical, Actress, Featured Actress, Score, and Book easily. It’s not a big, flashy production and emotionally understated work by directors tends to go unnoticed in the Musical category, so Director seems a lock for nomination but not as easy a win. The design is good, but it mostly stays out of the way and is wonderfully functional, so Scenic and Lighting are not likely to win. Choreography is perfectly suited to the material, but nothing award-worthy. Orchestrations seems an obvious nomination lock. Sound design of musicals on Broadway often disappoint me, and this one didn’t, so I’d count that as a win for the designer.

Honestly, I was so busy being distracted by the ladies, I completely overlooked how wonderful he was. Yes. Agree. Definite nomination for Featured Actor. Has a tuba ever been deployed to such hilarious, heart wrenching effect in a musical before?
Given the talk of a nomination, would Justin Cooley be featured or lead? He was nominated in both categories last season. I haven’t seen the show yet, but I hope to soon.
What a sweet special show. I feel lucky to have seen it. Victoria Clark plays such a believable teenager and it makes me laugh about all of the times I've seen people half her age fail to be convincingly teen on stage. Bonnie Milligan is a RIOT and I found Justin Cooley and Alli Mauzey to be the show's secret weapons. I hadn't heard so much about either of them in discussions about the off-Broadway run, but they were both FANTASTIC!
I think that if it can find its audience and last until June, it would be the HEAVY frontrunner for Musical, book, actress, and featured actress for Milligan. I could see something like Some Like It Hot or The Notebook (if that transfers) besting it for score though (although I would not count it out at all).
I think with no name recognition or stars, this will be successful by word of mouth. So, spread the word about this lovely show, I think it could be a hit. A picture of some of the merch for those interested:

Minor spoilers:
Many of the important emotional moments in the show have been expanded and allowed to hit more intensely. There are lots of lyric changes throughout that provide some more clarity and focus. The set is a similar design but has been totally rebuilt (and looks way better). There's now some automation: a few pieces fly in, and there's a lift at the center of the stage that brings on some of the set pieces, including the car seats. One of the numbers has been restaged to include a turntable, to brilliant effect, and the act one finale is a different song with the same intro.
I'm sure there are lots of other small changes. One of my favorites was the inclusion of an overhead projector during the disease presentation. The way they use it really helps to underscore the magical realism of Kimberly's extremely rare genetic disorder.
Good lord you people are getting me incredibly excited to see this! When's the last time this board has such a resounding opinion about a new show!?
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
