This article is interesting. It is my belief that this was in fact a great show and the only reason it closed was because Kristen Chenoweth was a victim of cancel culture. Kristen Chenoweth is one of the greatest performers to ever grace the stage and to go through all those months with people on this thread saying awful things about her it’s disgusting. It’s why the Broadway Community is so toxic. One minute they love you the next they treat you like a rat in the gutter.

I remember sitting there at Queen of Versailles and admiring the strength of this living legend to be giving such a great performance despite all the mean things people are saying about her all the criticism and she still shows up every day and performs. Truly one of the highlights of my year. No one does it like Chenoweth.

I know she has plenty of critics, but for those of us who still admire her for what she is—a living Broadway legend—maybe it’s time to show some gratitude for everything she’s given to the stage. Instead of tearing her down, why not appreciate the legacy she’s built and imagine what incredible roles she could still take on if she chose to return to Broadway? And honestly, if she decided not to, who could blame her after the way she’s been treated? For those who were so quick to be cruel, maybe an apology is long overdue.

But did Broadway love her back? No it didn’t it stabbed her in the back after years of loyalty.

It's not a personal attack on her -- the show sucked. No one is owed anything if their vehicle ain't roadworthy.

I mean… both things can be true. The show may not have worked, but people absolutely got weirdly vicious about her personally.

Every single person I know who saw it said it’s boring. Some of them didn’t even know there was controversy around her. The show’s score was a clunker and the book missed a huge opportunity to say something about wealth and power in the modern era. It has nothing to do with controversy, it’s that star power can’t save a sinking ship.

Imagine if people just spoke truthfully and Michael Arden could take an interview like this and say “You know what? It just didn’t work. We did the out of town tryout and we didn’t take enough time to whip the show into shape. But I’m glad we did it.” I think it’s okay to admit that, postmortem.

I think this show just goes to show that Kristin isn't a name to sell a show when the show isn't really any good...

As far as the OP’s post, I do think it would be fun to hypothesize what stage shows KC should do next.

I’d personally love to see her in a comedic play, whether new or a revival.

1. The show was terrible

2. her Charlie Kirk comment upset a lot of people and she buried her head in the sand , was a coward and didn’t explain what she meant. I lost all respect for her in that moment.

This! Her refusal to clarify what she meant were exceptionally telling. If what people were saying were wrong about you, then why not clarify yourself to get the truth out? In my eyes, that showed that where people were accusing her of was correct. She could have easily have just made a simple statement explaining the misconception, but she didn't do that. Which makes it seem like there was no misconception.

Sweets, the Broadway community and all of us on this message board are a teeny tiny margin. If the entire Broadway community and everyone on message boards attended the same Broadway show all together, we wouldn’t sell out 3 performances. Shows survive from the mainstream public buying tickets, not us. THEY chose to not buy tickets. Most did so for Kristin Chenoweth. Most were totally unaware of any controversy. Most had no idea it had a Boston tryout. Most had no idea it’s based on real people. Most have no idea who Stephen Schwartz is. The show’s word-of-mouth killed it. WICKED wasn’t received well critically but fans went ape-sh*t for it and word spread how great the show was and its still going strong. Yeah, we were savages with our opinions but no one but us is on here to read those. The mainstream ticket buying public has no idea this message board even exists. The Broadway community nor us had anything to do with the show’s failure. It was one sloppy mess and the public made it clear to others. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bravo Brody

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

100% agree with you.  It was a piece of crap about a horrible person.  I always thought that she was not right for the role.  ITs like they wanted you to like her, (Can't even remember her name right now) simply because Chenoweth was playing her.  That worked in disservice of a show that was already wrongheaded.  Oh, well, I guess it gives trolls an opportunity to post absurd statements to get a rise out of people.

Crusty Bagel/Krup You/Blow Gabriel/Broadway Flash/Angel of Harlem/Afrikan Queen/Joyce/Bandstand/Merkin/TheaterFanBoy1/TheatreKid24601....

I can confidently say I don't appreciate her ever but there's a tip: When you switch screen names make sure to not champion the same causes every time like defending Kristin, Laura Osnes, Scott Rudin, MAGAts, Charlie Kirk and racism/sexism/homophobia overall. Mix it up a bit, sugar.

Oh, and posting back to back posts (1107/8) about The Little Mermaid, a show that hasn't been on Broadway for 17 years attempting to sound like two different people? And both of you also happen to despise Cats, a show you admit to never seeing? And you both hate Lin- Manuel Miranda, the sweetest man in town?

You are impossible to underestimate, {new screen name incoming}!

Exactly. And people were free not to see her show and they didn't. Get over it.

I have a different account that I don’t really use much this is my main one but none of those are mine and I don’t hate Lin Manuel Miranda I like Hamilton and In the Heights. I think he is a good composer and actor I just think he’s a little overrated.

Second of all, I don’t know who Scott Rudin is. I like Laura Osnes she was fantastic in Cinderella and think the hate on her is so overblown. I am not defending being anti-vax at all and don’t agree with that viewpoint but she is a brilliant performer and it’s a shame she will probably never work on broadway ever again. I have never defended racism and homophobia and saying such is SLANDER. How outrageous to accuse someone of doing that. I never defended Charlie Kirk I only defended Kristen Chenoweth. And then lastly I don’t know how to switch my screen name I have been trying to do it for years on my other account and it never lets me which is why I made this one.

Full idiocracy on display. Say it with me-- Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of said speech. By the way, she's still working. TV, concerts-- this cancel culture narrative is nonsense so you can stop clutching your pearls over it.

The consequences of saying what? She said NOTHING WRONG. All she said was

“ Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives… I know where he is now. Heaven”

She said she didn’t always agree with him. You know where she stands on most of these issues it’s not like she has been silent on them. She has been a strong supporter of the LGBT Community. The perspectives she appreciated probably had to do with them both ascribing to the Christian Faith.

The hate that she got for that comment was completely unjustified.

Second of all, I don’t know who Scott Rudin is.

And yet, you said

That the boycott of Scott Rudin only prevented audiences from experiencing some major Broadway "events"

I guess that was one of the people in your head speaking for you. Weird.
