Come Tony Awards time next spring, the committee is going to have an issue. Lea Michele’s show-stopping lead performance in director Michael Mayer’s revival of “Funny Girl” will be a formidable competitor for best lead performance by an actress in a musical. But since she’s technically (and famously) a replacement for Beanie Feldstein in that same role, she won’t be eligible.”
maybe a Special Tony could be in order for Lea, for adding luster to the broadway season (or however they worded it that time Barbra won her special one back in the day)"
The show itself should win for adding excitement to the Broadway season.

It kills me (and her lol) that she won't ever win a competitive Tony for this, unless they actually go with Best Replacement. Unsure about the backlash it's gonna get though, even if she deserves the award.
I'm sure she's gonna win one in the future if she continues with good behavior in her career. She has the talent.
1. Has there actually ever been any mention that the committee is even considering a Best Replacement? (It's foolish financially and a bit mean, anyway.)
2. What backlash? Because she was a witch a few years ago? Its not a congeniality award.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I think the "win" Lea gets out of all of this is that she just might salvage her career, and I think that is HUGE and a good enough reward (or award) if one has to be given. That should be enough and is pretty damned good if you ask me. People said she'd never get to play this part, or she wouldn't be any good, or that she no longer had a fanbase who would come. She got to prove all three of those points wrong. Good for her!
My hope remains that she earns enough brownie points from all of this where some other producer/director/ creator decides to cast her in something new and fun where she can originate a new role.

I guess I wasn't sensitive to what Beanie faced. I saw her in it. I didn't care for her. She couldn't sing it. I was upset I spent the money. But that was kind of it for me. I do not know her and I am not vested in her. I think the show was highly anticipated and we all just wanted to talk about it.

Surprise, some people don't care/aren't invested in Lea as much as you don't care/aren't invested about others. Maybe stop complaining about the behavior of others if your own behavior isn't going to change.

I think the vast majority of people are invested and care about Lea. especially now that she is so good in the show. And that is all it takes. And I don't care about the behavior of others. I see it for what it is. Just like I don't care that your so invested in this show and this thread when it is something you have not seen and you pretty much don't know what you are talking about.

I totally agree. Would be fun to see her branch out and do something in an original show/music.

"What transcends it all is the presence of a Fanny who can deliver the musical, emotional and comedic goods — and with a backstage story to boot. With Streisand, it was that of a star being born. With Michelle, it’s one being reborn."
Entertaining the idea of a pro-shot I wonder if Ryan Murphy and Co. would want to bring back Jane Lynch? Though I prefer Tovah BY FAR, I understand how a GLEE reunion could help promote it.
You beat me to it, CatLady3! LOL! I had a giggle over this part: "Her well-seasoned acting chops (she’s been on Broadway stages since she was 9) allows her to calibrate Fanny’s mix of raw ambition, neediness, nerve and vulnerability. Some of Fanny’s insecurities, beneath her bravado, are rooted in her issues of class, education and looks. Michele is clearly a beauty that a period wig can’t hide, but we nevertheless sign on to the delusion."
The "too pretty" will never not be hilarious to me. Where were these people 10 or 12 years ago? They were eating girlie up in the comment sections not that long ago.

This is going to sound crazy, but I was listening to one of my fave podcasts recently and Isabella Rossellini was being interviewed. She just casually mentioned that there had been plans for a Death Becomes Her musical at one time. And I instantly thought to myself of course that would make a kickass show! I mean, if Beetlejuice can be a musical, why not?! LOL! With Lea in the Goldie role...diva off numbers with another fabulous female. Groff as Bruce Willis. I'm joking! Kind of!

Agreed! Even now I still see a lot of comments calling her ugly on social media. It's kinda similar to people now saying her talent was never in question and that everyone knew she would do well - because people here and elsewhere were really critical about her talent and any mention of her being in Funny Girl was met with rants about her lack of vocal ability and acting (among other things like behavior).

For people who saw both Beanie and Lea, it would be interesting to compare how you rate each performance on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.

The theater critics have seen both and given their reviews already. Not sure why people keep bringing Beanie into this.
Just enjoy the show with Lea Michele. No need to make anyone feel worse than they already do.

"Michele’s performance in “Funny Girl” is one of the top five musical theater performances I’ve seen in my lifetime. The last time I was this overcome at a curtain call was after Patti LuPone turned “Rose’s Turn” into a gloriously harrowing nervous breakdown in the 2008 Broadway revival of “Gypsy.”"

Beat me to it! Very clickbaity but well-deserved title.
