Jemm Three obviously included rigorous and objective systems in setting up the list, weighted for various factors, and established the complicated and nuanced technology to prevent "bunch voting" or "stuffing the ballot box."
This list shall now be the only list ever of this kind and all discussion must be ended.
Of course, it also might be a random list of some fans' opinions.
All polls are SUBJECTIVE, this is how the people voted, no evidence that the voting was just done by the young (14 year old girls), as they generally wouldn't be aware of musicals like Chess, which wow got to number 12 or Evita, so this sis how the American public voted, now get over it.
Why would anyone start a thread leading people to this pile of lies?
Well, they're not actually lies. They are just the results of a poll based on the website's audience. Not unlike the BWW Awards. A small group of website fans who hope to make their opinion mean something to someone, but ultimately indicative of nothing.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
Very true Mister Matt - how can you take a poll like this seriously when Priscilla Queen of the Desert is voted as the 17th best musical and My Fair Lady is the 93rd? Makes no sense to me.
From what I can gather, this is a relatively new (3 months old) and relatively small internet radio station.
And Phantom of London- this is a UK-based station. And it's on the internet. Presumably, the voters were from across the globe (though most likely skewing toward UK listeners).
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
This is horrible, but I can't think this is only 14 year old girls. Parade made the top 30, which I completely agree with. But, I can't see many 14 year old girls loving this musical.
I just can't wrap my head around the fact the GHOST made top 10 but NEWSIES nor KINKY BOOTS managed to crack the top 100...
----
Ghost played the West End. Newsies and Kinky Boots have not yet. If the listeners are mostly from the UK, they may be more familiar with Ghost.
That doesn't excuse the list. SMDH at no Show Boat or Follies, among other. 91-100 probably have more great and groundbreaking musicals than the top 10 and the less that is said about the shows listed from 11-20 the better. However, my favorite head-exploding moment was this juxtaposition:
#20 Starlight Express #21 South Pacific
Those two shows should not even be discussed in the same breath, let alone be next to one another in a ranking of best musicals. Of course, there also was this:
#41 Sunday in the Park with George #42 La Cage Aux Folles
Don't tell me that was pure happenstance that those two shows wound up next to one another. At least, they just managed to beat out #43 Blood Brothers (but, drat, not #40 Love Never Dies).
The only way they could possibly have come up with this list is they wrote the name on a card then threw the cards up in the air and this is how it turned out!!!!!!
I can't believe people are getting so upset over this. The methodology is clear and the results are EXACTLY what you would expect by popular vote of a UK audience IMO.
I think that most people under the age of 30 would generally think that WIcked, Phantom, Les Mis etc.. are better musicals than GYPSY, MY FAIR LADY etc.
I am more surprised that musicals like FOLLIES even made it on the list.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Broadway is a world class event organizer and the latest show the Christmas musical story is really a hit one. Les Mis show of Broadway voted greatest musical event is really great. new-broadway-shows-in-new-york
In 1999, Modern Library did a reader's poll of the greatest novels of the 20th Century:
ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand BATTLEFIELD EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee 1984 by George Orwell ANTHEM by Ayn Rand WE THE LIVING by Ayn Rand MISSION EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard FEAR by L. Ron Hubbard
Ayn Rand had 4 books in the Top 10 and L. Ron Hubbard had 3.
A poll of book critics and academics came up with the following list:
ULYSSES by James Joyce THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN by James Joyce LOLITA by Vladimir Nabokov BRAVE NEW WORLD by Aldous Huxley THE SOUND AND THE FURY by William Faulkner CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller DARKNESS AT NOON by Arthur Koestler SONS AND LOVERS by D.H. Lawrence THE GRAPES OF WRATH by John Steinbeck
Not a single match in the Top 10 on the two lists.
This list is no right at all!!! how some of those shows even made it on to the top 100 is beyond me however for fairness i came u with a new poll, just for us that actually know musicals! Please fill it in and i’ll have the results next week. Only posting it here so no Fan girls/gays will tell everyone to vote for just one musical!! Enjoy! http://goo.gl/6WGT9A The Greatest Musical of all time?
