What I didn’t expect, though, was to be absolutely floored by Tammy Blanchard’s performance. She was the most interesting and surprising part of the show, by far, mining every last bit of pathos out of the role. She acted the sh*t out of “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly, Seymour,” to the point where I couldn’t have cared less what her voice sounded like. Not that it was bad, at all, but, in the moment, it just wasn’t my focus. In a production that was pretty much by-the-numbers, she colored outside the lines, and elevated it, significantly."
I understand some people not liking Tammy's vocal performance as Audrey, but I thought it absolutely suited the character and really sold it for me. I loved her performance (and the whole show) when I saw it a few weeks ago. I also enjoyed Andrew Call as Orin, but have been dying to see Christian Borle in the role. Sadly, I've only seen Borle as Orin in videos from whenever they did performances on TV shows and the NPR Tiny Desk concert, so I need to plan another trip soon to catch him before he moves on to Some Like It Hot in the fall. Was Borle there on the performance you attended yesterday?
