Gotta go with Audra McDonald, Barbara Cook, La LuPone and early Mandy Patinkin (now he's just an exercise in excess). Of the newer generation, there's just too much emphasis on belt this and scream that, although I've found Christiane Noll to have a lovely, multi-layered voice capable of many emotional twists.
Rachel York - absolutely! And she does it without ever forcing it.
"My Funny Valentine" on her new CD is the best I have EVER heard. "I'll Forget You" from Scarlet Pimpernel - haunting. "Lost and Found" from City of Angels - so playful and sexy. "The Miller's Son" on Putting It Together - such a vibrant and varied interpretation. So many moods in one song. "So in Love" from Kiss Me, Kate - soulful and heartbreaking.
Everything she sings is fresh and new. She's so versatile. I'm listening to her LET'S FALL IN LOVE CD right now, for like the gazillionth time, and it still sounds like I'm hearing these songs for the first time. What a talent.
NORBERT LEO BUTZ...he did jason robert brown proud by being the original jamie in the last 5 years...the whole story just came to life through his voice.

Suit on up and come brace my sword
You look back when the pieces are missing
Hollowed out hope that no time can restore."

yeah buffy I actually saw the happy songs tour, with a friend of mine who is a huge fan. He agreed with me that she sounded extremely sad and melanchaly during supposed "happy songs."
