Gotta go with Audra McDonald, Barbara Cook, La LuPone and early Mandy Patinkin (now he's just an exercise in excess).
Of the newer generation, there's just too much emphasis on belt this and scream that, although I've found Christiane Noll to have a lovely, multi-layered voice capable of many emotional twists.

Rachel York - absolutely! And she does it without ever forcing it.
"My Funny Valentine" on her new CD is the best I have EVER heard.
"I'll Forget You" from Scarlet Pimpernel - haunting.
"Lost and Found" from City of Angels - so playful and sexy.
"The Miller's Son" on Putting It Together - such a vibrant and varied interpretation. So many moods in one song.
"So in Love" from Kiss Me, Kate - soulful and heartbreaking.
Everything she sings is fresh and new. She's so versatile. I'm listening to her LET'S FALL IN LOVE CD right now, for like the gazillionth time, and it still sounds like I'm hearing these songs for the first time. What a talent.

Umgeoboy:
Have you listen to her CD Happy Songs?
Hmm.
Cause, if you didn't hear happy there...
I think she sounds incredibly joyful on many of the songs there. "I Wish I Were In Love Again" Comes to mind.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 2:58pmyeah buffy I actually saw the happy songs tour, with a friend of mine who is a huge fan. He agreed with me that she sounded extremely sad and melanchaly during supposed "happy songs."

I... I forgot George Hearn.
I don't deserve to live. *Runs away, crying*
I kicked myself for not remembering Audra McDonald (and several others that were mentioned), but... Hearn...

I'll go with Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Rene Scott, Idina Menzel, Raul Esparza and Michael Arden.
Although he didn't sing in Big River, Tyrone Giordano was beautifully, amazingly expressive with his signing and facial expressions.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 4:41pmI've already mentioned her, but I'm saying Dorothy Loudon again because it depresses me that she's been mentioned only twice.
