Garland, of course. Cass Elliot Etta James Carly Simon Streisand Lupone Sutherland Barbara Cook Doris Day Colm George Hearn Michael Ball Audra Do any of the youngsters know any of these singers?
Footlooser: Cass Elliot ... "Mama Cass" ... The Mamas and the Papas ... does that ring a bell. I'm betting you know who she is but just didn't recognize the name right away.
strange as it may sound, deborah gibson comes immediately to my mind i saw her in cabaret and her version of the title song was the most moving performance i have ever been witness to... even liza disappoints me, comparatively, and I LOVE LIZA! so, thats my first thought but thinking more, i come up with idina menzel, elaine stritch, linda eder, anthony warlow, adam pascal, jennifer holliday ("and i'm telling you...going", anyone?) bette midler can i reach farther back still? the following aren't musical theater... but deserve mentions billie holiday and maria callas cant beat them in their element
Oh yes...Daphne Rubin Vega has an amazingly expressive voice! Also, Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner in Side Show...in every song you can feel the emotion in their voices... In my opinion that is one of the greatest gifts in musical theatre...the emotions that you can hear in the music. It's just gorgeous!
"There's a butt naked princess, lounging in a bed, calling your name. What exactly didn't you realize? Before our wedding night, pack up some of that dried monkey meat and have the royal cartographer draw you a map of the female body, captain. Maybe then you'll be more inclined to come explore!"
I know a lot of you don't like her due to her lack of acting experience and stage presence, but I think Linda Eder is amazingly expressive when she sings. She can make it sound like she's crying in a song.
Bernadette, of course. Wow. It's like her characters, as many people do, use music as therapy. wowowowowwowwow.
I think Susan Egan is extroardinarily passionate when she sings. Even if it's just "How Lovely to be a Woman" you can tell she's having SO much fun doing it.
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
Hmm...I agree with some of you that Adam Pascal has one of the most expressive voices. Gives me the chills. Oh, and also Daphne Rubin-Vega. Her voice is very unique. There are lots of others but I'm leaving it at that for now.
