I was supposed to see Moulin Rouge on 1/9 at 7:30pm, I received a random refund on my AMEX and after some investigation, I discovered it was my Moulin Rouge tickets that were refunded. Apparently they cancelled the Sunday evening performance and added a Wednesday matinee that week. I have a full schedule for my January theatre trip and would like some opinions. I have Flying Over Sunset on Thursday evening. Question is, would you keep your ticket for Flying Over Sunset or replace it with Moulin Rouge? I’m really torn and am unsure of what I should do. Would love to hear peoples thoughts.
Depends what kind of show you’re looking for. Moulin Rouge is an absolute blast. It’s loud and as they put it - a spectacular spectacular! Pop songs, great choreography - a really fun night.
I have seen both, and loved both. They are two EXTREMELY different shows. Moulin Rouge! is a full on frothy and spectacular party. Flying Over Sunset is much more subdued. If I had to pick one, I think I would go with Moulin Rouge!... it's just such fun night in the theatre.

Depending on where you live, and/or how often you come to NY, you might have other opportunities to see MR. Flying Over Sunset is a strictly limited run, and is unlikely to tour.
Moulin Rouge. If you are okay with pop songs vs original songs. Moulin Rouge is one of the most expensive tickets for a show I have purchased and it was well worth it. Spectacular!

I live in Orlando so I can get there from time to time but not often as I'd like. I'm coming back in April to see Beetlejuice and Funny Girl. I know I can see MR then, however, I only have two slots left for that trip and who know what else will be around by then. I'm sure MR will tour, I'm just torn. The word on Flying has been soooooo mixed. I know MR will at least be fun. I just don't wanna be miserable through Flying.

I can't as I'm seeing the closing show of Caroline, Or Change on Sunday at 3pm. MR is at 1:30 on Sunday. Replacing Flying Over Sunset would be my only option as I don't want to replace any other show on my trip. I even have a 10am Friday matinee scheduled. 11 shows between 1/4 and 1/10, I fly out early 1/11. I think it'll be too costly to change my flight and add a night at the hotel plus a new theater ticket if I were to add MR on 1/11.
Personally, I wouldn't want to see a big spectacle show like Moulin Rouge in a rush with 10 other shows. But also, if you think you're going to be miserable at Flying Over Sunset, you could just get the ticket refunded.

I really enjoyed FOS and MR when I saw them, however I’d pick to keep Flying Over Sunset over replacing with MR because Flying will 1000% be closing and more than likely not going to tour. MR does not have a closing date in sight AND will have a NA tour.

I'm not going into the show wanting to be miserable, the word of mouth just seems very mixed-negative. While I don't have to love the show, I want to avoid being bored. As of now, I'm leaning towards keeping FOS, as others have mentioned MR will tour and will be on Broadway for a bit anyway.
Has Lincoln Center ever cut a run short? FOS doesn't seem to be selling based on looking through the availability on TeleCharge. That would certainly make the decision for me if LC decides to call it quits with FOS on 1/2/22.

They have. Back in 2011, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (which had a similar performance timeline of November-March) shuttered in early in January.

I think FOS opening night is Dec 13 or Dec 14? I think if reviews are positive and they see a change in ticket sales, this show will proceed and end in its original final day in Feb.
if critic reviews are negative and they don’t see a change in advance sales, then I can see FOS ending earlier than anticipated.

I’ve seen both recently and I’d recommend Moulin Rouge. Flying Over Sunset was ok, but I was blown away by Moulin Rouge. The sets and costumes are spectacular. Even if it does tour, I wouldn’t think the sets would be quite that impressive. I wasn’t expecting much out of that show, but I had the most fun I’d had in a long time.

But Women as at the Belasco, right? Not one of their venues, so I'm not sure that establishes precedent.

Just to let everyone know, I've decided to see Flying Over Sunset Thursday evening, I added Little Shop of Horrors, to see Jeremy Jordan's final performance on Sunday evening, in place of Moulin Rouge, and I extended my trip one night to catch Moulin Rouge on Tuesday evening. I do appreciate all the input.
I liked the movie Moulin Rouge, but the Broadway version didn't work for me. Flying Over Sunset was painful. So I recommend Diana, which is my absolute favorite.
