Olivo and Tveit do not need replacing - it's the book that needs replacing."
I'd say way better than Mean Girls too in terms of the new movie musical adaptations. I haven't seen Pretty Woman but from what I've read this is getting much better reviews than that one too.

At least its way better than frozen"
Well, not to defend Frozen, but at least that show respected its' source material......

I wouldn’t say “respected” so much as “crammed with filler,” to be honest.
I feel like MR has the potential (key word potential) to be one of the better movie-to-stage adaptations, but only if the team takes some of the criticism from this tryout to heart. Namely, solidifying the book and cutting a few of the modern pop songs. I hope the team genuinely intends to work on it between now and Broadway and doesn’t just try to ride on the name - that’s what will make the difference between a fun show and a great one.
So I got to see this show again last night after seeing the first preview. I still very much enjoyed it and I welcomed the minor changes (I didn't think there were any drastic changes tbh). I really liked that they added the dialogue making Come What May their secret song and was used very briefly by Satine in the end before she goes back to Your Song. Although I wish they'd get rid of the Come What May lyrics during the Elephant Love Medley because that still does not make any sense given that Christian's character was supposed to have composed it in Act 2.
I thought Karen and Aaron had better chemistry this time around. It seems like this creative team is open to making changes, hopefully they'll make the necessary book edits for Broadway. I especially think Christian's narration at the start of Act 1 should go because it ruins the pacing of that opening number and it makes it seem like there's a repetitive introduction for the bohemians. I'd say just pick one (this scene or rhythm of the night). Tveit is also better when he's in the scene rather than narrating it. And I wish we didn't get introduced to the Duke first off (before even Christian and Satine) and that they address his character at the end, because I have a hard time believing someone they play to be that sinister in the show does nothing at the end and just disappears.
Also, as much as I love Karen singing it, please get rid of Firework. It just doesn't work.
I saw the two weeks ago. I second a lot of the same thoughts already shared about the show.
I think the show is spectacular and the production is very well designed. It's going to do very well.
However, i really wish "Come What May" is the secret song instead of "Your Song". The show kind of didn't do the song justice and how much weight it carried for the film and for the characters.
Karen, while an amazing performer, is not Satine. She is too robust and doesn't have the frailty of Nicole's Satine, who's supposed to be DYING. Karen's performance is strong but whenever she felt sick, it just came off forced and out of nowhere. In the film, you feel for Satine, i didn't feel much for Karen's Satine.
Aaron is great. No complaints there and the rest of the cast is absolutely amazing. No one is phoning in their performance.
The ending-- They need to have Christian walking down the aisle in the theatre and Satine singing "Come What' May" to him. THIS is what people want to see since they got rid out the entire part of the duke trying to kill him.
He’s not a carbon copy at all. He’s just a cute guy who’s been crammed down our throats from casting directors who want to make us believe the American idol singing voice is the only one that entertains. Has nothing to do with a person of color. Just actually cast the right person in the role
Gorgeous sets, amazing costumes, terrific choreography and the opening number of Act 2 was wonderful. Even the audience was Beautiful last night -- can't remember the last time I saw such a well dressed crowd at theater
And now I must find my inner Leonard Pinth-Garnell for everything else. We sat in Row B of the Balcony, dead center (101 and 103) (we were originally downstairs, then they started rescheduling and everything . . . ). They don't seem to sell A 101 and 103 or 102 and 104 as there is an extension to the railing that juts out that really would block the view from those seats. Our view in B was also somewhat diminished of anything happening on the Stage Right thrust. Show started about 7:20 (called for 7) after many speeches.
This felt like a combination of Great Comet (the sets), Xanadu (they occasionally went into parody, and I think if they went full out they could have succeeded) and Pick Your Own Least Favorite Musical. Instead of answering questions, cast members sing 2 lines of a song from 25 years ago that was better left forgotten. The already slim story is even more slim, see through, even. Danny Burstein, who I adore, should NOT be singing Florence and the Machine, or YES WE CAN CAN CAN at the top of his lungs.
2nd act is better than the first as it is shorter.
Of course there's post curtain call music and malarky.
Oh and there were empty seats in the Dress Circle -- about 20 all the way on the left and about 10 all the way on the right side. Not sure if they don't sell them. Also 7 "slightly better than school buses" all from one company parked outside after the show. I didn't see any obvious large groups there.

HANDS. DOWN. A terrible performance. Him and the book were the weakest links. And, severely, miscast imho.

Agreed. Christian, and Ewan's interpretation of him, was not the emotionless "Ken doll" we have on stage. Christian is an awkwardly charming young man who is ALL heart and not aware he is someone people think is hot. Tveit doesn't fit that bill. A person of color could absolutely play the role, but that's not the issue with the current casting.

Sunday evening, 7/29 was opening night with several invited guests, including Tommy Tune, the CEO of Ambassador Theatre group, and the owner of Moulin Rouge. The buses were for the guests, cast, etc to attend the gala at the Museum of Fine Arts after the show.

If you go out the front door of the Colonial and turn right to go to the corner of Boylston and Tremont, then turn right onto Tremont, it's about half a block down in Allen's Alley. It's between the back of the Colonial and back of the Majestic. Allen's Alley is the alleyway extending off Tremont in the Google Map picture I added below. There are barricades set up towards the stage door itself, but the line usually goes most of the way down the alley.

The sidewalk on the same side as the Alley is closed. You may need to cross over to the sidewalk on the other side. I would not recommend walking on the street. It’s likely a bunch of people will be looking for the stage door. I say follow the crowd.
Yeah, that's a good point. If you go a touch further down Tremont on the right side (ie, cross Tremont and then walk down) you should be able to cut across eventually.
Stop trashing Aaron (and Karen)! They're both terrific in the show.
But when can we expect to see some media reviews for the show? It looked as though it opened on Sunday night, but perhaps that wasn't the "press night"? Actually, I have searched all over, and can't find an official opening night date for MR. What's that about?

The 3rd still sticks in my mind for some reason but I can't be sure. Also agreed on the fantasticness of this cast.

Others are allowed their opinions, I thought they both sounded great but had no chemistry.

Nope, the theater itself had a Gala, and included the cast in its celebration.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I read reviews at different sources and found the following one which I found fascinating from Rick, a big MR film fan, who had flown up from Dallas with his wife:
"but the magic between Sateen and Christian was amazing. From our seats (the Diamond VIP seating), we could see the actual tears rolling down their cheeks and their quivering lips. So powerful!"
Did anyone on this thread with this close-up view of KO and AT? I realize from my reading that some felt a lack of chemistry but maybe this is why the powers that be didn't realize soon enough since they were sitting close. Dramamama, you had the additional aggravation of the windmill blocking your view up in the Dress Circle, right? According to some who went a second time, there was a bit more emphasis on physical closeness to try for chemistry. I haven't seen it so........
Also, in the film, there were the alternating close-ups of Christian and Satine with loving looks during rehearsals, etc. with "Come What May" playing adding to the high romance. Guess they need a projection screen showing the tears to get the feeling. lol. I know Aaron is a first class crier when singing or acting.
Also, I agree everyone should have their opinion but some on this board seem to be into talent assassination (my alteration of character assassination). Severe trashing seems a sport for them -- I could be wrong but whatever it is -- it Bothers me -- snowflake as charged, I guess.
