I was just thinking about this...what musicals have been represented in non-musical movies by performances, etc. The two I can think of are Jesus Christ Superstar in "Along Came Polly" and Sweeney Todd in "Jersey Girl". Oh! And what about TV too? I saw a Simpsons episode based on Evita and a Family Guy where they do The King and I. What else?

Godspell in "Meet the Parents" and "Wet Hot American Summer."

I'm sure there are more, but I didn't get enough sleep last night.

At least I think it was Meet the Parents. Ben Stiller goes into a store and hears "Day By Day" playing on the radio, and then is asked to say grace at dinner and says "Day by day... day by day... oh, dear Lord, three things I pray... etc"

Family guy also made fun of Rent...

I think the line was:

"If you want to do a bad play, do Rent!"
Or something like that.
I was offended, but still laughed.

Ok, so moving away from TV...CAMP had some good looks at
"Company" "Follies", "Promises, Promises", "Dreamgirls", and "Fiddler"...haha...the Black fiddler on the roof always makes me laugh...same with the white girls doing Dreamgirls.

Family Guy had an episode when Meg, Chris, and Stewie did a rendition of 'So Long, Farewell'. It was quite funny.

Also, this is my first post. Hello!

Family Guy also did an episde that parodied My Fair Lady. Stewie was trying to the nextdoor neighmore how to speak properly.

Gilmore Girls referenced Caroline, or Change (far too late to help ticket sales, but still). There was a psuedo-West Side Story sequence on Scrubs. And I think I remember a school production of Cabaret on Veronica Mars.

Greg Focker uses "Day by Day" as his prayer...sorry if someone already posted that...I'm too lazy to read all posts.

CONNIE AND CARLA is filled to the brim with musicals! Very funny movie! Two thumbs way up.

Will and Grace always has cheeky theatre references. A few of my favorites:

Karen to Jack as he demands 500K and her bustier collection because Rosario wants a divorce: "You ain't gettin' eighty-eight cents from me Rose!"

Jack referring to his genitals as "Master Harold and the Boys"

Jack to Will when Will is becoming addicted to pain pills: "Effie we all got pain!"

"When you're a gay man, you have to feel good about yourself when a urologist says, "Yeah. I pick you". - Happy Endings

'Family Guy' is loaded with Broadway references because Seth McFarlane is a Broadway addict. He loves it, he worships it, he has 'Hello Dolly! Karaoke' in his car.

As for movies with Broadway references...well, Mel Brooks has a lot of Broadway in all his films, because, obviously, he loves it. Such as 'Young Frankenstein', soon to actually hit Broadway, with the "Puttin' on the Ritz" follies-esque bit.

My sister asks me to put in that in a Teen Titans episode, Raven was going off with some goth guy, and he asked her "So...do you like showtunes?"

Thank you! re: Musicals Represented in Non-Musical Movies

I also remember the Jesus Christ Superstar reference in Saved!. The movie was hilarious, and that part was hilarious, as well. I think I laughed for ten minutes at some of the comments a few characters made in the scene.
