In response to the "Musicals you hated at first but then liked" thread, what musicals have you listened to one time and automatically knew it would become one of your all time favorites?
Mine: Les Miserables Miss Saigon (I love schÖnberg and boublil!)
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
I've had a lot. But the one in most recent momery was DRS. I saw the video clip on here and became obsessed. It drove me crazy because I only knew little snippets from songs. So the next chance I had, I went out and bought the recording. I love it!
"While some feel it is a film related question, I seem to think it may be a 'I am thinking of losing my winkie' sort of question." -cheezedoodle
Like BobbyBuddy, too many to list. But here are some highlights: Sweeney Todd Jekyll & Hyde Spamalot Kiss of the Spider Woman Man of LaMancha The Boy From Oz Godspell Passion
"We are all misfits, I guess, in the theatre. Otherwise we wouldn't be here." ~Michael Kandel, "Ogre"
Ragtime. My sister gave me the original concept recording for Christmas the year it came out, because she had heard some of it and thought it was something I would like. I loved it at once, then got the complete Bway recording, saw bits and pieces on TV (Tonys, etc.). When I finally got to see a production of the show, I was literally in tears by the end of the 10-minute opening, I was so thrilled.
I have to put in a plug for Avenue Q, too: I knew very little about it when I first heard a couple of songs, but that was enough to sell me on the cast album, and once I had the cast album, I was a die-hard Q-Tip (and believe it or not, I was a fan of the show in general before The Big Crush really set in). When the day comes that I finally get to see Q on stage, I'll be thrilled at that, too.
