I'm listening to the Overture as I type this. Looks like I paid for it twice, but I just couldn't wait any longer
It truly sounds incredible. There's SOME dialogue, but not that much. Biggest disappointment is cutting Patti's opening to "On The Verge."
These orchestrations really deserve a Tony nomination. And my ultimate pipe-dream is to see this nominated for Best Original Score. Yazbek deserves it. His work here is so wonderful.
I somewhat agree with you, ljay. The orchestrations are fantastic and some of Yazbek's best work is on this album (Model Behavior, Invisible, On the Verge). But I still can't get past songs like Madrid, Yesterday Tomorrow and Today and The Microphone (among at least three others).
I totally respect your opinion. I am just so glad to see people warming up to this score. And I completely agree that some of Yazbek's best work is on this album.
P.S. It's nice to FINALLY hear "Shoes From Heaven." It sounds lovely. They must be including it in the final licensed version of the show.

I agree about the orchestrations...they are truly fantastic.
I actually like Madrid (along with much of the rest of the score), but that number in particular to me missed a lot in terms of potential. It could've included some character exposition, more dancing and chorus parts, and it could've been a real showstopper.
Agreed about everything above! Ahhhhh :) Tangled is such a great number!
What a great little write-up by Frank Rich in the booklet!
The recording sounds really great. I didn't hate the show, but definitely didn't love it either. I think it might have my favorite lyrics of any new musical this season. They're pretty incredible.
Wow. I am absolutely astounded by the beauty and originality of this score. I an so sad this closed before I got to see it. This definitely deserves to be nominated for orchestrations and score. I would love to see it win. I just can't get over how great this show sounds. Absolutely stunning. Thank god they recorded this. Hopefully one day I will get to see this live.

It's really sad how lackluster some of the songs are compared to true gems like "Model Behavior", "My Crazy Heart", "On the Verge", and "Tangled". I really wish this show had been better, because there's so many diamonds in the rough. So much potential. Oh well. Good thing they recorded it - it actually comes off better recorded than it does on stage.

It's only on the recording (or, rather, the clips of it I've heard thus far) that I'm deciphering more of the lyrics. And they're brilliant/hilarious, but when heard live, the accents muddled a lot of the best stuff.
I always imagined this score would play better on disc than in the theatre. The issue to me wasn't so much the quality of the material as its suitability for telling this story in the theatre. I still don't understand how a screw ball film comedy ended up on stage with so many ballads.
Has there been any word on a licensed version of the show? I hope so! Also, why did they change the finale? Shoes From Heaven is such a beautiful song. Did it just not work in the context of the show? What finale did they do instead?

I think it was announced that MTI picked up the rights to license the show. I'm sure that was a big factor in having it recorded, produced, and released: a show having a cast recording is crucial to it being successfully licensed.
I loved this show. I saw it 4 times and it got better and better each time. I really HATE Microphone but other than that I think it is a very strong score. I'm so glad it was recording and really was recorded well. I love Lie to Me, Sherie and Brian sound wonderful.
Mine STILL hasn't arrived, and it was shipped last Wednesday! Most shipments to my house from the NY area take 2-3 business days.
P.S. "Sharing" with those who have already paid is caring!
I got mine today and it was shipped "last Wednesday" from 30 blocks away.

I didn't see the show. Was the cast really as unanimously brilliant (vocally) as they sound on the recording? I mean, just on songs like On The Verge and Tangled it seems a shame that not everyone got enough solo time to show off their skill.
So frustrating I haven't gotten mine yet!
Still waiting for mine. Now I don't feel so bad about buying it in on iTunes.
So I'm in love with this CD. Have been listening to it for hours. Particularly obsessed with Lovesick. Full version is so god damn glorious.
I'm loving the whole thing! I can understand why people were having issues with Microphone, but for me it's just the lyrics. The music is fine, but the lyrics are a little... odd.
^ I have listened to the whole cd three times, and I have listened to my favorite individual songs at least ten times each. Such a stunning score with beautifully poetic lyrics and incredible orchestrations.
Having not seen the show, and only heard snippets of the songs so I was eagerly anticipating the CD.
Yazbek's lyrics, and many of the songs are at the same level as THE FULLY MONTY or DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.
Laura & Patti come off best on the CD. Laura seems to still have a decent chance of picking up a second Tony.
'On The Verge' is one of the most infectious melodies I've ever heard.
