The truth is in the middle - no the city is not so dangerous you can not walk the streets like the Fox News people claim - this stuff terrifies the bridge and tunnel people and outer borough theater fans - however it has deteriorated in quality of life - I work in the city - in theater and see it everywhere- in fact 10 minutes after I left the Waldgreens  on 8th and West 53 last weekend some thug stabbed the same security guard I said hello to . 
Adams is  ok as a mayor - to anyone thinking of Wiley for mayor - she would have destroyed everything- period - she is a radical pro criminal lunatic - Adams was far better a choice than this lunatic - vote Wiley and NYC will become Detroit in a year . 
the good news is International tourists are back in full force and out of state tourists to a degree 

the bad news the Bridge and  tunnel boomers who love Broadway are too scared to come to the city - however things have drastically improved  in 2024 vs last 2 years - Times Square is packed again

Oh good grief, I live in Chicago and it is not true that Chicago is "worse than ever." Chicago has its problem spots like any other city, but the fear mongering makes it sound like you're risking your life to visit or live there, just like the media is trying to do to NY. Most of the crime in Chicago is gang related and is centered in neighborhoods far from the parts of the city where most people live and visit. If you're not a gang member or drug dealer, the chances of anything bad happening to you in Chicago are extremely small -- not zero, but very small. People seriously need to get a grip and make conclusions about the world as they actually experience it, not as they read about on social media.

But my sister just planned a last minute trip to New York next week and I have been talked into accompanying her and her family since they dont' know what they're doing and I could serve as a tour guide. The already booked their hotel which is on 8th Av in the mid 30's. My sister and her family are die-hard Trump/Fox News people and they will lose their minds if they see a homeless guy or a drug addict anywhere near their hotel. Right now, they aren't planning on seeing any Broadway shows (because it is too expensive for them) and so hopefully I could get them back in their room before sundown. I saw this post and noticed that ten of you "liked" it. Normally I stay in the heart of Times Sq and never have any problems with drug addicts and/or homeless. But my sister just planned a last minute trip to New York next week and I have been talked into accompanying her and her family since they dont' know what they're doing and I could serve as a tour guide. The already booked their hotel which is on 8th Av in the mid 30's. My sister and her family are die-hard Trump/Fox News people and they will lose their minds if they see a homeless guy or a drug addict anywhere near their hotel. Right now, they aren't planning on seeing any Broadway shows (because it is too expensive for them) and so hopefully I could get them back in their room before sundown. Not sure what else I can do if it's as bad as you guys are saying.  I rarely walk down past Port Authority so I really don't know.

Yes I am as shocked as you guys are that they want to come to New York despite all of this negative news coverage they consume. 

Perhaps I mis-spoke. They're not going to lose their minds at the sight of a homeless person but they will if they have to see a homeless guy pleasuring himself or a homeless guy spitting in their 9 year old daughter's face.  Stuff like that is what they don't want to see and WHAT I WAS TRYING TO ASK before people took this thread in another direction was is 8th Ave in the 30s just regular run-of-the-mill addicts who may just ask for money or are they they aggressive, chase-you-with-a-hammer type of addicts?  I'm never in that area so I don't know. Can we please stop the soapboxing and please answer my question if you're able. Thanks!

You replied to my initial post so I’ll tell you what I’ve seen , or haven’t. I haven’t seen anyone pleasuring themselves. Or at least didn’t notice what they were doing. What I have seen is open air drug use, needles on the ground, fist fights needing medical assistance, unconscious subjects, and possibly a deceased male that another male was trying to wake up but he was clearly unresponsive. By the hotels there are little seating areas. I’m not sure what their purposes are but the addicts are in just laying in benches or in zombie phase from their drug or choice.

I mean 8th Ave and mid-30s is kind of one of the worst spots in terms of homelessness. Anecdotally, I nor no one I know has been attacked with a hammer, but you’re certainly going to witness homelessness and possibly drug usage in this area. I’m not sure anyone can say for sure what kind of *specific* behavior you may or may not encounter. Again anecdotally, I haven’t personally seen any of the more extreme behavior you’re asking about it.

Yes, everyone in New York is spitting on everyone, pleasuring themselves in the streets and chasing each other around with hammers. Just ask people waiting in the endless TKTS lines in Times Square. The city is a dystopian hellscape. Your peeps should definitely hide in their hotel room and watch Fox for their entire trip.

As someone who preferred the pre-Disneyfication version of Times Square it doesn't seem like any of these reports are keeping throngs from filling the streets. Filling the theaters is another story, that might have more to do with the meh collection of plays and musicals filling the stages these days. Next season should improve things because many of the shows either have stars or good word of mouth or in general are just more interesting. This season felt like a bad month at the multi-plex...next.

Good question - honestly De Blasio policies took a while to take effect , he is the reason we are seeing the deterioration in Manhattan and the Bronx - he got lucky - Bloomberg was the best mayor this city has ever seen , everything was in order for the idealistic dreamer like De Blasio to destroy , I feel bad for Adams , Met the man several times Mr Adams is a good guy with a big heart and a true centrist, De Blasio was a dangerous ideological idiot , he set the sort up for failure and the wheels started falling off in 2019 , os he as psycho as some of the city council and someone like Wiley , not quite , but he set it up for failure , know this before you turn your back on Adams

So like, can we also talk about why large cities would have higher crime/homelessness rates? The answer is because there's actually resources here that allow them to survive. Most did not ORIGINATE there, they migrated there. Why? Because where they lived prior was not conducive to survive. The reality of it is that their homeless either relocate... or they die. Maybe if other communities were not so quick to push off their own responsibilities onto others (pushing undocumented migrants north for publicity) and actually worked to make their own cities hospitable to not only migrants, but other indigent populations. NYC, Chicago, SF, LA have their reputation because the rest of the country turns up their nose at their own responsibility so everybody comes here.

There are Trump supporters everywhere most of them are normal, it’s the Trump cultist with the MAGA stuff that are bizarre, my mom likes Trump so does several of my gay friends, you would never know in a million years , I like RFK Jr because I’m a thinker not a party line  sheep

Worm or not - he can speak a full sentence where as Trump and Biden can barely communicate- face it Biden is the worst president since … Trump, RFK Jr if allowed to debate will humiliate your hero Biden and the 1980’s celebrity clown Trump - your problem the TV tells you what to think, and vaccines?
