It looks absolutely fine. As has been explained, there are numreous reasons why it needs to change. The logo is too similar to the film (and the logo for the film has to be the same as the stage because it's like buying into a brand, you recognise it from its logo, see Team America for proof) and the advertising campaign for Rent has been too boring for far too long - it needs something new and different.
At times this board can be so whiny and pathetic.. just listen to yourselves sometimes. Why approach the new poster with such immediate hostility? What does it achieve? Do you really feel that you 'own' Rent so much that you have a clearer voice than anyone else? Do you work in the marketing industry? Will 99% of New York even notice the difference? Is this new poster going to seriously affect sales, as in, group bookings, overseas bookings, RENThead bookings? No.
In about 3 weeks time everyone who said they hated it will turn around and say they love it. Why does everyone object to change so much?
I just went to siteforrent.com to see who Antonique Smith was and saw that Moeisha is listed as an understudy...does anyone know if that's current information or what role(s) she's understudying?
Andrew, tonight isn't about you! It isn't even about me!!! - [FD]
it doesnt matter if you like or dislike the poster, but it seems like the marketing team for the movie got paid to copy the original shows marketing campaign. and now the show had to come up with something else.
I think if i was part of the new campaign i would be embarassed, not because it sucks, but because they're just copying someone else's work
Ha- I think the poster is hot. It's totally Lower East Side/East Village late 80's/early 90's appropriate.

Do you know for sure that the marketing firm for the movie is different from the team that does it for Broadway? And I think the "now" thing is to let us know that the show still applies to "now", and it's not just a show from the early 90's. Some people are at the age where they're discovering RENT for the first time. They can't keep things the sam forever, just for the people who don't like change. Even with slight changes, and different people on the poster, you can't keep the same ad campaign forever, or people (and I'm talking about the general public, not theatre fanatics) will stop noticing it. I agree with loudasthehelliwant--I kind of like it. I actually wish that I could see it in person to look at it more closely.
I love it. It def. captures the feeling I get from RENT and makes it totally different from any other show currently running on Broadway. I like that its trying something new, what does it have to loose? Although, I dont' like that Cary Shields is the only one on on the poster, if you're going to put one, might as well put multiple ppl.
I have to be in the camp of those who dislike it. For one thing, I feel it is too different from the original logo, so people coming down the street who have heard about RENT may think at a glance that its a different show, when it isn't. I see the need for differences from the movie that's up and coming, but that big of a difference? And I agree with RentBoy86, in that they shouldn't have just singled out Roger. For a poster like that, they should have at least included Mimi in with Roger, because she is connected with him, and being that RENT is based on La Boheme, some would argue that RENT is mainly Roger and Mimi's story...
...that being said, it might've been better if all the main characters were included :/
Q: What is the most weirdest or funniest thing a fan has asked you?
Joe Flanigan, Stargate Atlantis: When a fan asked me for help with his grammar. I'm available.
...it looks like andy warhol and lisa frank got together and this is what happened....don't like it, and half the stuff on it doesn't even make sense....what's up with the doves?
OK well I'm just asking to be skewered here but I think its very eye-catching and funky... It isn't very RENT oriented but it will catch people's attention and that is the purpose of an ad, is it not? I like it... it's something I kinda wanna hang up in my room. RENT is obviously trying to appeal to a younger demographic, because we (people my age, 16 or so) tend to have spending money and don't have to worry about bills and stuff. A 40 year old wouldn't find that appealing but a 16 or so year old would definetly consider seeing it from that. They're just trying to make money so I don't blame them. If that really is their intention then it's working... I cannot wait til I see it (10 days!!!) even more now. I agree with Rose&Lark... If only they singled out Mark (sigh)...
(Also not saying EVERY teenager is going to love it but a lot would.)
You know what's sort of interesting? That Roger is right in the center of it. I sort of doubt that it's some deep analytical move, stating Roger as the center of the show or anything, but it's curious. They probably just stuck Cary there 'cause he's hot.
I think it's a piece of art and, as some have said, a refreshing change. Whether or not it's the right way to advertise the show right now is debatable, but it's definitely nice to look at.
