i wonder what were they on when they made this
Had heard talk about this poster before I actually saw it. I promised myself I would give it a chance.
Having said that...
I hate it.
In response to everyone's question of "Why did they get rid of the 'old' ones?"...the answer is: they want to separate the movie from the show. That simple. The old poster and the new movie poster look identical. They need to show the difference
This poster is far too busy. It looks like they asked a middle school class to do a collage of what they think of when someone says "Rent the musical" and then threw it all together.
Hideous. Although I agree they wanted to be different than the movie poster, they accomplished that.
ETA: This was post number 3000 for me, wow.
can you imagine if this poster replaces the huge Cary poster in the middle of times square??? this poster is too ugly to be that big.
You know, it sort of reminds me of what I always envisioned the propaganda posters in 1984 looking like...

That's what I'm thinking. But, personally, they should have made the movie art different. The show shouldn't have to change to suit the movie, though I know it already has.
But, yeah, I'm not liking the poster. It does, however, emphasize the whole druggie aspect of the show...still, it's not appealing.
well if they wanted to seperate the movie from teh show why didn't they make the movie poster different? and what's up with the Rent Now thing? I think i missed something.
okay but the movie poster isn't the same as the broadway one, they look nothing alike.
To people who pay attention, like we do, they look nothing alike.
To the average person walking down the street, they might look exactly the same.

So, I'm not saying I love it, but I can see where they were coming from with it.
First of all, it seperates it from the movie.
Second, it's more "now". The graphics go with the semi-retro '70's/'80's thing that's going on now.
Third, the images are all from the show, in different ways.
The Candle (the thing that kind of looks like a tree, and has "WISH" written along side of it), is obvious.
The legs sticking out are Mimi's (the fishnets--"black leather and lace").
The dove's represent peace.
The butterfly represents rebirth, or second chances.
The heart represents love (duh), and life.
The faint skull under the heart would represent death.
There's a small angel, which would be Angel.
I bet if you looked closely (at the actual poster, since the frame kind of blocks some stuff), that there would be representations of every main character.
I think they could've done the representation thing -- images from the show, etc -- and still made it look less cartoony.
It just... meh. I don't know what I'm trying to say.

its so..... ugly (for lack of a better word). WTF were the thinking?? its so....wrong
i'm really confused right now-- the movie poster has the 8 pictures right? then the broadway poster (the old one) has antoniette (sp?) and cary with the candle, and theres another one with the three of them. How do those look the same?

I think they went a little overboard. The graphic designers could have been more subtle. The background is way too much. I like the faded newspaper look, but it's just too dimensional.
xM3L24x: The poster I'm thinking of is the OBC poster, not the one with Antonique, Cary and Jim.

Oh, I was referring to the original. But still, the whole characters in little color blocks idea is similar.
Well, I think it looks all right. However, it looks a little too cartoony for a show like RENT. About the RENT: LIVE ON STAGE thing, yeah, that would be cheesy. It's all right, kind of boring, though, and dissapointing.
It looks like a 7 year old wannabe fashin designer did it.

im not sure what to think. its definately eye catching to say the least. it kinda reminds me of the all shook up and hairspray websites. its eye catching and will get the attention of people walking down the street, but i dont think it really conveys the whole message of what RENT is. this makes it seem like another sugar-coated musical. i can kinda see where they were going (eye catching and different) but they went about it all wrong.
yea so if your refering to the obc one, why change the one with antoniete, cary and jim? especially since shes in the show now, and so is cary.

I really don't like it. It looks far too bright and cheery and poppy if that makes any sense. As someone else said, it looks like some little kids colored it in art class in the 5th grade. It just doesn't seem relevent to the themes of RENT at all except for the couple pics on it. I don't get it.
