For the sake of precedent, I can see this too, but him actually getting nominated period doesn’t seem likely wherever they petition him. The play categories are ridiculously strong and and the reviews tend to praise Jin Ha moreover than Cheadle.

One thing I’m curious about (and I know this may sound like a dumb question) is how will Cats: The Jellicle Ball's beats by Trevor Holder be considered. Would it be jointly eligible for Best Orchestrations or for Best Sound Design of a Musical?

Also would Schmigadoon! be considered eligible for Best Score even though much of the music is from the tv show?

Agree that Cheadle likely won't be nominated, but I just saw Proof this weekend and it was fresh in my mind.

I also think slotting Rose and Thomas in lead for Balusters would be warranted

I think ROCKY HORROR might try to push Durand and Hsu up to leading. Durand doesn’t have a shot in hell in either category, especially if you put him against Evans for leading. Hsu got the best notices outside of Evans so I can see them wanting to push her up in a very weak year so they can slide Gray into Featured.

Rose and Thomas for Leading would make the most sense, but both might be hard pressed to secure the nomination in a very ensemble show.

CATS, by my estimation, is primed for a solid 8 nominations at minimum (which, for any revival, is impressive). The only question marks are indeed whether the remixing will go under orchestrations (which would make a 9th nod) or sound design (which is already factored into my OFFICIAL TONY AWARDS ELIGIBILITY 2025-26.

Additionally, how many performers stand to be nominated. There was chatter that they may try to push André to leading to avoid competition with any of the other males, but that would basically be ripping a Tony out of his hands. The two most likely nominees are André and Tempress, with Sydney likely being a third nominee from the show. Considering the weakness of the female categories, I could see them possibly considering Leiomy as well.

Re: CATS orchestrations, it has a new co-orchestrator listed compared to past productions, even separate from the beats. So I think it has a good chance at a nom, and beats prob belong in Orchestration.

Ok you know what, that makes a lot of sense...and I think it has a good chance it also gets a best sound design nom as well

Cinco Paul has recently noted how many new songs were written for the stage version; so, I think it's safe to assume they will be pursuing consideration in the Best Score category where they need to show that just over 50% of the score is new... and that doesn't apply to just the number of songs in the score... they will literally count the number of bars in the score and also include any new lyrics for any of the existing TV songs to get to that magic percentage needed.

Wow, I actually did not know this...that's pretty cool

Cinco was quoted in a recent article saying there were 11 new songs...I have no idea how he reached that number because it only looks like 4 to me? But this would likely indicate that they've at least submitted for consideration. I wonder if the admin committee just says to hell with it and allows them to compete since there are so few musicals this season.

Speaking of, I've heard that the next and final eligibility meeting has been moved to tomorrow. So all these category questions should be answered soon!

I’m still intrigued to hear if Alden Ehrenreich will be ruled as Best Leading or Best Featured Actor. Adored his performance and hoping he is put in Featured for it’s a less crowded/less competitive category.

Brad and Janet as leads in Rocky Horror is very surprising to me!

Am I right that because Alden Ehrenreich isn't above title and nothing was noted, that means he's officially Featured for Becky Shaw?

And I'm happy that there's enough new content for Schmigadoon to be eligible for Score!

Correct.  For all Second Stage shows, all company members are listed below the title.

The biggest ramifications here are that A) Andrew Durand in leading means Best Actor in a Musical now has nine eligible performances and goes to five slots (which are now pretty close to locks — Henry, Tutty, Uranowitz, Christopher, Evans) and that B) Best Score now has five eligible musicals (plus play scores) which means the nominators can't honor any play's underscoring without dishonoring, so to speak, Beaches or QOV's full score.

#68

OFFICIAL TONY AWARDS ELIGIBILITY 2025-26

Schmigadoon being eligible for score is definitely the biggest surprise. I don't think it takes it over Two Strangers, but it may result in Schwartz receiving a respectful nomination for QoV to fill the fifth nom slot in the absence of any play score of note this year.

Metcalf being ruled Featured for Salesman may mean we see a double nomination for her this year.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

Fred Mason said: "Will there be 5 new musical nominees?"

No, just 4 — there need to be 9 eligible shows/elements/performers to get 5 nominees. Since play scores (which can run the gamut from Stereophonic to scene change music) are also eligible, that category has well over nine eligible entrants: the change here is that there were only 4 new MUSICAL scores assumed to be eligible (2Strangers, Lost Boys, QOV, and Beaches) and now Schmigadoon will make that 5. Until now, it looked like they would HAVE to nominate a play to fill out the category.

The way Andrew Durand just lost a nomination but somehow made Luke Evans 100% gettin one is amazing.

Also, Schmigadoon!!! They might win!

We have 10 contenders for Actress, right? Sherrill, Levy, Michele, Chenoweth, Pitts, Mindelle, Chase, Vosk, Barrett and Hsu.

And 9 for Actor: Uranowitz, Henry, Tveit, Christopher, Tutty, Brightman, Evans, Durand and Benet.

Well, they obviously demonstrated to the Tony Admin committee that more than 50% of the score is new; so, they don't think it's nonsense. And, I would say it has a decent shot at winning with the race being between it and Two Strangers.

"

Although that category doesn’t often go to musicals where a good deal of the score isn’t original. The only exceptions I can think of are GigiCats (most of the songs were T. S. Eliot poems set to music), The Who’s Tommy (in a tie with Kiss of the Spider Woman), and Newsies. Thus, I can see some voters scoffing at Schmigadoon! for not having a completely original score.

No mention means consistent with opening night credits and since Ehrenreich is not above the title, it means he will be featured
