If MEMPHIS can win an Emmy after being broadcast on PBS, ONCE could win if it ever gets filmed.

I kinda felt like whoever is voting on the Grammys would choose "Once", since there's the recognition from the Oscars. I mean, the revival of "West Side Story" and "American Idiot" won in prior years. I don't think any of the voters even listen to the cast albums they were voting on. I personally would have loved it if "Follies" got it, as that one to me was the most satisfying to listen to.

FOLLIES deserved it big time. A masterpiece of a cast album. Why don't they get rid of the category since they clearly don't give a sh*t about it...

Do Kazee and Milotti actually receive Grammy awards?

No.

It goes to the album's producers. It's not a performance award.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

No, actually, when the categories were restructured in 2012, the award description changed.

"From 2012, the award description is as follows: 'Award to the principle vocalist(s) and the album producer(s) of 51% or more playing time of the album. The lyricist(s) and composer(s) of a new score are eligible for an Award if they have written and/or composed a new score which comprises 51% or more playing time of the album.'"

So Kazee and Milioti and the two producers all receive an award. Just as Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells did last year.

givesmevoice -- I had NO idea the rules changed. I just looked it up and am a little speechless.

The nominees for ONCE were:

"Steve Kazee & Cristin Milioti, principal soloists; Steven Epstein & Martin Lowe, producers (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, composers/lyricists) (Original Broadway Cast With Steve Kazee, Cristin Milioti & Others)
Label: Masterworks"

So Kazee, Milioti, Epstein, and Lowe are the Grammy Winners for this album. Hansaard, Irglova, and Masterworks are too?

I find this a bit bizarre. I can't wrap my mind around the principal vocalists of a cast album being a Grammy Winner.

Principal vocalists on Best Opera Recording winners have been getting Grammys for years (which is how Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald won theirs in 2009). This change for the Musical Theater Albums just brings it in line with the similar categories.

I forgot to congratulate the cast and album producers and writers of "Once" for their win. (even though I wrote earlier that I thought "Follies" should have won). They were my second choice.

Completely agree that Follies should have won. That is one of my favorite cast recording ever. Brilliant recording. My second choice was Porgy and Bess. Also a fantastic recording.
Not sure this win truly means anything since it so obviously wasn't the best cast recording this year. Not even close. Almost like Newsies better. In fact, I think I do. I certainly listen to it more.
Perhaps it won because it is still running. Who knows?
Anyway, congrats to them. But trying to keep it all in perspective.

I couldn't bring myself to really like "Porgy & Bess". Great performances by a strong cast, but marred by crappy reduced orchestrations.

I actually find the Follies recording to be terrible. I don't enjoy it at all. I think Once actually was the best produced album. Not judging by the scores at all (which is appropriate since Follies and Porgy & Bess are revivals anyway), I still think the sound quality of the Once album is by far the best of the nominees. Congrats to them.

The Grammy goes to the nominee with the highest sales. Riverdance also won for this category in 1997.

I love the Once recording. I think it's well made, beautifully performed, and smartly produced. Congrats to Martin Lowe and Steve Kazee, now Tony and Grammy winners for Once!

I voted for ONCE; I think it sounds spectacular and gives a great representation of the show itself. As for the FOLLIES recording, I think it's an okay recording of a mediocre stock production; the dialogue, which sounds arch and canned to me, doesn't help it. I think Bruce Kimmel should have got a Grammy for his remix of the OBC, and I also like the Papermill recording.
