"Looks like they're already 1/8 of the way there after just day 1. "
Of course they are-they are controlling the narrative, and manipulating it so some fools will give a charitable donation to reimburse some of the front money.
This is pitiful. I just love when the rich beg the average Joe for money. The show was a big flop on Broadway. Why don't they ask their rich friends to fund their 3 minutes of TV time? Why can't they find people in the city to house the actors for free rather than pay for hotels? Most of the people watching it on TV will go -"That was ok....not my cup of tea-.honey-get me another beer.. when are they gonna show "Hamilton?"
Yeah so this feels like they are using Deaf West to make it feel like you are making a charitable donation but really you are likely paying back an investor. Like if they don't raise $200,000 are they really NOT going to be on the Tony's? It's May 24 I'd have to believe the lineup is well set.
I know it would be great exposure for Deaf West and accessibility in the arts, but I'd honestly rather give money to them to fund more new works. And unless they make it explicitly clear, the casual Tony watcher might have no clue what they are even watching ... "weird choreography."
lol I loved the "weird choreography" but I'm with you, I think there are more effective ways for the show/tour to get promo. How many random Americans are going to flip the channel and go, "Wow, I've never heard of this before, but now I'm going to spend $$$ on a tour ticket?"
I wish they used the money for a cast album - or something like a visual album for the hearing impaired.
I came in here to say this whole thing reeks of Ken Davenport, but you all had me covered.
For those suggesting a cast album - that was ruled out a long time ago as it would leave out half of the cast.

If the network wants numbers from the shows, they should pay pay for them. Do the producers of the Oscars and Emmys charge the studios for the clips they want to show? The Wing and the League should consider holding the Tonys in a non-televised ballroom celebration where all of the nominees and winners are acknowledged and can speak as long as they like. And then the network can produce a post-Tonys "Best of Broadway" TV special featuring everything that's running, a two hour commercial for Broadway that makes it seem like the most exciting destination in the universe.
If the Kickstarter ends the day before the Tonys, there is no way that this isn't already a done deal with an investor giving the money upfront. They need to be scheduling their actors, reserving flights, rehearsing, building the set, gathering props. That all won't happen the morning of the Tonys.
There's no way I'm giving money in this senerio. Especially when they made it so difficult to get reasonably priced tickets to the actual Broadway show. For a show about young people, they sure didn't price it for young people to see it.

The studios pay to prepare and deliver the clip but that is not the analogous situation which is the songs sung on the broadcast. Your POV about reverting to the ballroom is, as I suspect you well know, naive as it misapprehends both what the League wants, and also what the network wants. If the ratings are already poor, imagine how much worse they would be without the tension.

Deaf West's Big River performed on the Tonys.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
They are nearly at $40k mark already. I don't think it will be very difficult to meet the goal, probably even by EOW. But after the vitriol on this thread about Ken Davenport, I wonder how the theater community will react to SA's performance. I guess we will know more once Ken's blogpost comes in.
Meanwhile, any guesses on what they'll perform? The original did a mashup of Mama Who Bore Me and "Totally Screwed" *rolls eyes at stupid censoring* if I remember correctly. I did love their version of Mama Who Bore Me when Wendla is looking at her conscience, her voice, and they are singing to each other. It was beautifully executed. But I also loved their Purple Summer.

Even if Ken Davenport isn't behind this, who in their right mind would donate to this? If you are going to donate your money, do it to a cause that directly helps deaf people. Not for this, which is a performance by the wealthy and fortunate for the wealthy and fortunate. I'm sure if people TRULY need their fix they can watch the late night clips they filmed back when the show was actually running.
