I love Diamond’s performance - so meticulous in both the acting and singing. But a win to me would definitely be the underdog compared with the more flashy performances from Victoria Clark AND Ashford. This is a super competitive year.
I actually think Ben Platt is also giving a Tony-worthy performance. In my opinion it’s a completely different performance to his Evan (he comes across as cold, clinical - even annoyingly pretentious at times - not anxious like Evan). But then when he sung “it’s hard to speak my heart” it felt like he was just pouring directly from his soul and won us over. There is so much emotion that went into that song it’s overwhelming - and his voice is used so delicately and restrained. He can use his voice to express emotion almost as well as Bernadette Peters can for me and that’s not something I would say of many. Listening to it now on the cast recording it has been captured now for life in the most brilliant way.
Again Best Actor also ultra competitive so I don’t know if it’d happen, but in an ideal world I’d love to see Parade to win for Best Revival, Actor, Actress, Director. So hopefully it becomes a bit of an event over summer (right now it feels like an event and the advance has certainly increased but I fear the momentum will slow without the hit of Tonys).
I think what most surprised me about the show was that I actually thought the entire thing came across as a bit of an ensemble piece. Every note, word, character, actor, staging etc all came together to produce something that is far greater than the sum of parts. The show and production are so great that it almost over shadows any individual contribution made by a single actor including leads. It’s perfect!!
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.
