"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Wow, guess you guys don't game very much. Music-based video games have been in existence for a pretty long time and as the hardware has improved, so have the games. It's not just pushing buttons in time to the beat anymore, and I've been waiting for showtunes to make the crossover into video games. It's nice to know I don't have to rely on a bizarre combination of Singstar Abba, Singstar Disney, and the High School Musical singalong game anymore to get my kicks. :P
(Although I will never ever stop playing Vib-Ribbon with my cast recordings. :3)
I almost wish it was an actual game, like you have to travel the underground maze to the Phantom's lair, avoiding obstacles all the way, to save Christine. I'd get that, just for fun. This is just glorified karaoke, which I can do for free at home with my iPod and a hairbrush.
For the Wii, maybe you are the Phantom and you have to throw lassos.
New topic: what game would you design based on a musical?

^^^ Maybe not for A Chorus Line persay.. but I would buy one made from Hairspray and you have to dance to get on the Corny Collins Show or something along those lines
Butters, go buy World of Warcraft, install it on your computer, and join the online sensation before we all murder you.

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
Read the article people! It's going to be in the style of Rock Band or Sing Star. It's not like you're going to have to negotiate the Phantom through the tunnels of the opera house.
i thought for rock band you can buy additional songs, but use the same game. why doesn't he just make an expansion pack of his music instead of making people buy a whole new game?
You have GOT to be KIDDING! I LOVE POTO, but this is a bit much.
At least make it an RPG where you are the Phantom or Christine and have to gather items around the Opera House, interact, make a story.

I think they should make one for Sunset Boulevard. It's my dream to play Norma Desmond.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

what? and waste the chance to make more money? webber? never!
You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

Well there was a phantom game, not the ALW one though, it was dreadful, but it had a nice intro with crashing chandelier and all, I think it was called Mask of the Phantom, or something like that.
I think the singalong one would be cool, and if the tech is good enough, then it would be great for other shows too.
Even though I hate games.

I think it sounds fun. Half the songs on Rock Band are ones I've never heard of.
But seriously - people are always bitching about musical theatre doesn't go mainstream or whatever and now here's a game made in accordance with one of the most popular (I'm saying nothing of its quality) musicals of all time. Lighten up!
"'Phantom' and Cats, may seem like strange concepts for games at first glance, but two industry shifts have inspired the urge to bring the titles to the gaming world, more female gamers in the traditionally male-dominated game consumer demographic."
That makes me feel bad being a straight guy who will buy these. Maybe it's just the wording.
But I had the idea for a Sweeney Todd video game back in December. Same with RENT
Justin: it was "Return of the Phantom" and yes, the best part of the game was the opening sequence.
SPOILER BELOW (for anyone who might actually go hunt down this game...as I did)
Basic plot: It's 1993 (or 4, but does it really matter?) and you are a detective named Raoul, attending a performance of a recently discovered manuscript for an opera called "Don Juan Triumphant" (supposedly written by "Erik: the Phantom of the Opera!"). The chandelier comes crashing down during the performance, leading many people to believe that the Phantom has returned, and is angry that his work is being produced. Your investigations lead you to the catwalks above the stage, where a mysterious masked figure appears out of nowhere to shove you over the railing...
...sending you back in time to the old days of the Paris Opera. You are now Raoul de Chagny...blah blah blah...like a condensed version of the book...and at the end you chase the Phantom to the chandelier where, upon removing his mask, he sends both of you plummeting towards your demise as he cuts the chandelier loose...
...and you wake up in 1993/4, the recent chandelier crash having never happened because, as you discover in a book in the library written by Mme. Giry, Erik and Raoul de Chagny both died in a tragic accident many years ago involving a chandelier crash. But whose shadow is that you see sneaking past the library as you read the book...?
There have been two Phantom of the Opera video games in the past. One was for an ancient long gone platform, the other titled Return of the Phantom came out in the early to mid 90s. True neither were based on Webber's musical, but both were based on the source material.
I'll agree that this does sound very silly, but the Phantom Phan in me is interested. I wonder if it'll be some sort of karaoke game, which might be fun for the whole family or friends who enjoy musical theatre. Who am I kidding, I'll probably end up getting a copy.
