For a moment, I thought the subject line was referring to BWW forum members.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Is it time to do away with gender based categories?"
I would say it's almost guaranteed J will be nominated for best actor.
As far as gendered categories, I always feel so conflicted. Gendered categories feel archaic, but I also really don't want to halve the number of acting winners and nominees each year!

Lol. I could see that. But nah, I did this because I feel like fall shows get forgotten."
I don’t think fall shows will be forgotten in the 22-23 season, especially with critical darlings Into the Woods, Leopoldstadt, and Kimberly Akimbo getting considerable early awards buzz. Also, each play revival so far this season has received some damn good reviews as well.
The coming spring looks surprisingly weak, especially on the musical side, but I would love to be proven wrong!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

It was close for me. I will be interested to see if he gets put into lead or supporting. If lead, I think he'll have a tougher go of it, as I think Ghee's role is flashier and has a bigger and more noticeable arc. If he goes into supporting, I think he's got more of a shot, though that is going to be a much deeper category.

They could solve that issue by having two winners in each category. Best leads in a musical: person X and Y; best featured: Person A and Person B.
In some ways I like it more because there are lots of years in which the two best performances in a musical or a play have been given by two people of the same sex. As an example, Carol Channing and Barbra Streisand would have undoubtedly both beaten Bert Lahr, who was undoubtedly wonderful in a badly reviewed flop, Foxy, that ran ten weeks. In 1975, would Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera have cancelled each other out, or would one of them have beaten George Rose (clearly in a supporting / featured role) or would voters have voted for both of them, cancelling out Donna McKechnie, who was clearly (to me) in a supporting / featured role. Would Richard Burton and Alec Guiness have shared the 1964 Tony award, and Sandy Dennis gone home without a second Tony for a very fine performance in a light comedy.
What would be the precise category for this award?"
Whether or not someone is actually eligible is REALLY REALLY important for a thread on an internet forum that is called the PHONYS and is essentially just an avenue for people to share the shows and performances that have stood out to them in the last 6 months.

That’s nice. Quite literally not the point of this thread though since her show hasn’t opened yet"
Sorry "genius" -- the play has already had a healthy run in London, and was filmed for NT Live and has been shown in US theatres -- so many of us have seen her in the role.
Lea Michele would definitely be a strong contender for best actress. It’s a shame she won’t be eligible for the real thing, I do think Sonia Friedman had something planned to make up for that. Maybe a performance on the tony awards?
