Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri to Make Broadway Debuts in ‘Proof’ Revival
https://variety.com/2025/legit/news/proof-don-cheadle-ayo-edebiri-broadway-revival-1236494472/
“Proof” begins previews March 31, 2026, with opening night set for April 16.
Exciting casting! This play is, surprisingly, a blindspot for me despite its long run and presence in every undergraduate acting class.

Guess that means Hell’s Kitchen is closing?
Right now the Shuberts have the Barrymore and the Music Box fully not booked for the Spring, the Booth and the Jones with plays currently slated to close in January and the Broadhurst with unconfirmed rumors of its post-Muppet/Magic show plans (The Majestic and the Winter Garden would also be free by then, but it would be absurd to place a show this intimate in those barns). With so many empty theatres, I can't imagine that they would book a show for the Shubert, especially not without announcing HK's closing first. Though I imagine the text message chains among the cast and crew just went absolutely wild.

Per the NYT and press release, it is playing an unspecified Shubert house. The Variety piece is wrong.

Most likely was a mistake as they posted on X:
Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri will make their Broadway debuts in a revival of “Proof,” directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail. “Proof” begins previews March 31, 2026, at a Shubert theater to be announced, with opening night set for April 16.
But it must've sent the Hell's Kitchen cast and crew into a frenzy if they saw the article. 💀 ☠️

they should already be worrying, given the downward trajectory of grosses and attendance. I doubt they should be worrying about Proof taking over the Shubert. It is too big a theatre and, as much as I like both actors, there is no historical evidence that either is a box office attraction capable of filling the Shubert…nor would the show benefit from being performed at the Shubert.

You two had better luck finding that stuff than me!
I'll guess and say the Barrymore.
Longacre, assuming TWO STRANGERS shutters in December?

I'd put the Jones, Booth, Music Box, Golden, and Barrymore ahead of the Longacre, as far as likelihood goes. Maybe even the Lyceum...
Two Strangers is cheap to run (about $500K a week). Kevin McCollum will want to make a go of it and see how the month post-opening goes, unless sales are TRULY abysmal. That doesn't mean Two Strangers will still be here on February 1st, but it means PROOF would be waiting on an answer until a little too late in the game.

Ayo Edebiri is someone I never would imagined in this role, but it almost makes too much sense. She is absolutely going to crush as Catherine.
If you haven't read or seen Proof, I truly think it's up there as one of the best plays of the 21st century. Just one of the most riveting scripts I've ever encountered.

Between this and what looks to be a juicy role in After the Hunt she could be 3/4 of the way to an EGOT by next summer.
Two incredible revivals lead by outstanding actors announced on the same day…feels like Christmas.

Incredibly exciting news. Cheadle and Exebiri will be outstanding.
Wish it wasn’t Kail directing, but with these two and the name I’ve heard rumored for Claire, should be phenomenally well-performed.

I love this play!
Love the casting!
but gotta say, I see this one on TDF
What about Kara Young as "Claire"? A bit different role, and less showy, but she can do anything -- and would complete a great trifecta of actors.

This is being advertised as a "strictly limited engagement." Anyone know anything about how long the run is supposed to be?

I wonder who they'll get for Hal. It could work with an actor of any race, but if Hal is a white actor, I think it'll bring in a really interesting dynamic with his relationship to Robert (and his attempts to publish his work after his death) that isn't usually present in the show.

These sort of productions are typically 12-16 weeks.
