Rename a theatre for Hal Prince

Was just wondering if they would now honour the great Hal Prince with a theatre name.
I would love to see this happen to honour him

Good idea. Maybe the Majestic?

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

I'm usually against renaming theatres, but there would be something serendipitous about Phantom playing in "Her Majesty's" in London and 'The Prince' on Broadway.

I love this idea and it would the only theatre that would be perfect to be named after him in New York.

While I love the Majestic Theatre name, I'd love to see it renamed the Prince Theatre.

But if they want to keep the Majestic the Majestic - why not the Broadway?

Personally I would love to see the majestic renamed. Though I do love the name. But the “Prince Theatre” is perfect

I second renaming the Majestic the Harold Prince. However, having a Broadway theater called "The Broadway Theater" is really confusing for people and kind of strange, so that might be a better choice.

Is there a formal process, say with the Wing, Equity, or other organizations, to rename a theater? Is it voted on? Is there a special process? Or if a theater owner just walks up some morning and on a whim decides to rename a theater after anyone or anything (even if they aren't connected to Broadway) can the owner do that?

I believe they can. For example, the Schoenfield was named after Gerald Schonefeld, someone that worked for Shubert but had zero connection to the world of Broadway beyond the Shubert offices

I like the Majestic. Rename the Broadway Theatre. Evita played there and it is probably confusing for some people.

It's entirely up to the theatre owners. All it would take is for Phil Smith, Bob Wankel, and the Shubert board to decide to rename, for example, The Majestic or The Broadway. Or, in the case of Nederlander or Jujamcyn, Jimmy Jr. or Jordan Roth would make that decision himself.

That's a terribly ignorant thing to say about Gerry Schoenfeld but I'm not going to get into more of it.

Definitely the Broadway Theatre. Especially since one of his works is about to go into that theatre. It would be perfect timing.

Split the difference: The Prince of Broadway theater (or the Majestic Hal Prince theater)

Would you describe Hal Prince as "someone who directed some shows."

Rename the Stephen Sondheim Theatre to the Hal Prince Theatre.

Quickest way to get it to happen would be an Open Letter in the NYTIMES, signed by Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, Angela Lansbury, Tim Rice, John Kander, Charles Strouse, Sheldon Harnick, Scott Rudin, Jeffrey Seller, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jason Robert Brown, Susan Stroman, and other key members of the theatre community who knew and revered Hal.

The decision would happen in a weekend.

A civilian letter-writing campaign or petition, while well-meaning, is not going to get anywhere. It would need to come from the top of our industry.

Well, the Shuberts should rename the Broadway... The Prince

Is it strange that that I have already formally started to look into it?

I  know two others have said this, but I hope you were kidding, but Gerald Schoenfeld was the Shubert Organization. That man's life was Broadway, and he has every right to have his name on the theater.

'I think Prince will have his theater far sooner rather than later.

Now, I wonder if they are going to stick with the new norm of picking a single theater to dim their lights?

If you're referring to the lights being dimmed for Hal, they did that this evening at every Broadway house.

That was what I was referring to, and thanks, thedrybandit. I think individual house electricians would have done it on their own, anyway. He was a much-beloved man.

Is there some significance to the Broadway being named the Broadway? I’ve always thought it was a very lackluster name and a terrible marquee layout.
