Why would it change the way you talked about actors or shows? It might make posters be nicer to each other but why would anyone care if an actor saw you talking smack under a real name?
"
Says someone named "Helob" :) It would change EVERYTHING. It's fine if you have a critique - what's not fine is to make it personal in such a way that it becomes offensive (although certainly other posters take great joy in being offensive, and live for it, just as others jump on that bandwagon and try to outdo it. Prior to the Internet there were plenty of bitchy little cretins out there, but they were talking to each OTHER, not on a public message board. I do love the "I'll just pick up my marbles and go to Reddit" stuff.

What an awful idea. I have no desire to have my full name out here just so people can read how much I hated or loved a show. I would find another board.
I also rarely post but I come here every day to read everyones posts. The vast majority of people who post here are fantastic and give great reviews of shows even if they hated the show.
"
Why? It's your opinion. Can you only state it if you're anonymous? Do you have the courage of your convictions or not? It's as simple as that. Of course, you might state your criticisms differently if you were posting under your own name. Which is the point. And you wouldn't find another board because there would be no other board with the traffic of THIS board, which is, let's face, why people come here - they KNOW their little opinions on everything under the sun are being read. It's all about that.
Quick question : with respect, why do you say that you don't hide behind initials (in your post on Patti's blog), but yet your screen-name here says different?
What stopped you from using your full name when you first signed up?
I myself have some concerns over privacy and security. Are they not legitimate?

Because I don't do social media and what I say on a message board shouldn't be easily found by just searching my name on Google. It's nobodys business what anyones real name is here.
And i don't need courage under my real name to post that the anarchist was the most painful thing I've ever had to sit through. It's a message board on the Internet, if you don't like what someone posts then either skip over their post or put them on block. Nobody is forcing anyone to read what is posted here.
"People visit the board for many reasons and the commentary is mostly positive, astute, creating demand, awareness and reach and positive information. It is, has been, and will remain the largest collection of theatre fans and ticket buyers in the world, bar none. It would be wrong of us to ignore these facts, and those posters."

My user name is part of my first and last name & until I recently changed my pic, it was a pic of me. My name is Helen Lobonc and I'll still say what I think. I really don't see why people think using an online vs real name would change their opinions. People on fb reply rudely to numerous threads, I still don't understand how it would change the way posters discuss things. The personal attacks between members might slow down but is someone going to not say "I think so & so is the worst actress ever" just because they show their real name? What is going to happen if so & so knows their real name? Is the actor going to contact them? That would be awesomely bad for the actors.
I use my own name 'cause I do not "hide" behind my computer.
You can be critical of someone.... that is fine.
But when you bash them 'cause you think it is funny (for their looks or such) then you cross a line.
Maybe I am a Polyanna (and I can handle it if you want to bash me) but calling someone a C on the page or a retard is rude. How would you feel if you were calling your sister, mother or daughter a C or you had a child with disabilities and someone called them a retard?
I think the button is to be if someone is threatening or being aggressive in their posts.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

And that's fine, but that was just one post in the pull quotes, wasn't it? Somehow Murin and her ilk blew that up to "shut down all internet chat boards everywhere!"

Because my initials are - MY initials? I don't think it's much of a secret who I am, do you?
Patti has officially won and succeeded. she was not doing this for change or progress... she was doing this for publicity. she has been featured on broadway.com, NY times, several social media sites, gothamist, daily news, ny post, and more. the original intention of this was for her to vent AFTER ADMITTING THAT SHE DOESNT EVEN READ OR VISIT THIS MESSAGE BOARD. now all of a sudden she has become a warrior for change. i will just way what others are thinking: this was a media grab. she is playing it for viral hits and views. nothing more. thank you
Have none of you EVER seen a comments section on Facebook? People post absolutely terrible and disgusting things with absolutely no sense of shame, and it takes basically legitimately threatening someone's life to have the post removed or the person punished in any way. They say sexist, racist, misogynistic, homophobic things with their real names and faces right there. People on the internet have no shame, anonymous or not.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I personally appreciate the efforts in this regards. I see nothing wrong with negative opinions specifically - what bothers me more is when it's more about the posters, than about the topic at hand. When the "sound of your own voice" becomes more important than the comments themselves, then sometimes you have to think if this is the right way to go. It does seem at times that sounding clever and being a smart-ass is the theme of certain posts/posters...rather than voicing a valuable opinion.
That said, I appreciate the positive comments about the majority of the posters. It's still a great board where you can ask questions, get updates in shows we are interested and find other interested posters who want to talk about the same things many of us do...voicing both positive and negative opinions. I personally have no problem just ignoring certain posts... but it would be nice not to have to.

" I think you meant to direct that at the actors who are demanding it, and yes, I've seen that everywhere there is a Facebook-linked comment section like on many news sites.
In fairness, guys, there have been numerous posts here referring to BK and mentioning his real name. He produces and his company sells excellent re-mastered versions of classic CDs, usually original cast recordings.
His FOLLIES is a jewel in my personal collection, and BK's name is on it. Deservedly so. When the re-mastering was in progress, he kept us posted; so he "outed" himself.
It isn't arrogance for BK to say lots of people here know his name. I do, and I'm at the age where I can barely remember my own name. Those who don't know his name can certainly search for it.
I'm sorry, but that is still vastly different from having your full name next to your every post.
I have been on this board for years and, through my inclination toward certain topics, have managed to avoid any major discussions centered around him.
It is presumptuous to assume a user on this board can look at the initials "BK" and know precisely what that stands for.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

No, it's not exactly the same, but BK has been rather free with info that would identify him to anyone who cared. I don't think he can be accused of "hiding".
Before this latest I-don't-know-why-we're-arguing scuffle, if you'd asked me whether most longtime posters knew him, honestly, I would have answered "yes".
